Samsung 980 1 TB PCIe 3.0 vs samsung 970 evo plus 1tb pcie 3.0

If it is the regular 980 rather than the Pro then IIRC the 970 Evo Plus is the better drive but I might be wrong on that - haven't checked things like TBW and what kind of cache they use.

The 970 is better, it is a higher-end drive with dram, but the 970 isn't the same drive as what the reviews cover because Samsung have updated it several times.

980 has had at least one revision since the reviews as well, but I can't be bothered to keep track of it all - I've 970 Evo Plus and regular 980s in some of my older setups and always seem much of a muchness - last time I bought something in this range I went for a SK Hynix Gold instead as was on offer at a slightly cheaper price and has much higher endurance specs.

A 4.0 drive should be backwards compatible with any PCI-e 3.0 system - though you won't get the performance benefit of 4.0 speeds.

if you're on a budget then going for the samsungs are an even worse idea
i'd opt for an msi spatium m450 (pcie 4) or a wd sn 570 (pcie 3)
ideally though, the wd sn 770 (pcie 4) if you can get it on a deal

id avoid them all:

If you buy anything now, as long as it isn't old stock that has been sitting around, you should avoid these issues.

wd sn 570 (pcie 3)

Personally I'd say the SK Hynix Gold is a much better option, assuming you can get it at similar price - they've been on deals a lot. They've got higher endurance and generally perform well against the competition especially for gaming use.

yes absolutely

looking for one around £50 - £60 Max

holding out for Black friday drop as well. so some options of good drives would be good

PCie 3.0 but also 4.0 if they are indeed backward compatible.

neither
why not get a pcie 4.0 drive instead?
PCI-e 4.0 will make no real difference in a budget build and any user would be better off with a PCI-e 3.0 SSD that has a proper DRAM cache and a good controller over a budget PCI-e 4.0 SSD that’s stripped down and will run slowly if it’s full due to having no DRAM cache.

Also, Samsung is fine. They updated the firmware of the 980 Pro that was causing the issue.

the "should be" bit worries me a bit, i'd rather have a "it is"

I've never heard of problems with the main SSD brands or with any recent motherboard. Mileage might vary if using a very old chipset from when PCI-e 3.0 was still in development or lesser known brands (usually results in very long POST times rather than complete failure).

You should be absolutely fine with AM4 and a brand like Samsung, etc.
