Samsung A70 6.7" 4500 no curved screen ~£400

Got a security update yesterday, that was a long wait after the previous one.

A have fitted a tempered glass screen protector now for peace of mind. Don't know how much protection it actually provides, but good to have it there. I re-registered my thumbprints, and accuracy doesn't seem to be affected. I can't register my index finger though, I can only get it to 84% before it fails. Too small I guess, I'll persevere. But the thumbprints are the important ones. The vast majority of the time I use facial recognition to unlock it, and the thumb prints in apps.

Yeah just a minor security update. Thought it was Android 10 update but that's not due until April iirc for us second rate phone owners.

The fingerprint unlock is much better with the new update. Facial recognition only works if I make a silly face for some reason. I think varying amounts of facial hair and weight confuses it lol.

Yes, my work colleague's Samsung S8+ is getting updates well ahead of the A70

It will do, the A series phones are on quarterly updates. We should have had that update in december, not sure what happened but they decided to wait and and incorporate the jan security update. We still got it late even then as the ASL4 firmware was available for H3G (3) a few weeks ago, yet I also only got it yesterday on XEU. You'd think the BTU/XEU would be released before the carriers got their hands on it *shrug*. I had actually downloaded the H3G yesterday ready to flash with odin, so that's saved me a job lol

I'm trying to decide between the A70 and the M30s. The main differences i can see are:

* A70 is slightly bigger (6.7" vs 6.4")
* A70 has lower megapixel camera but meant to be better than the M30s in low light.

* A70 has gorilla glass
* A70 has a notification LED.
* A70 has a 4500mah battery vs gargantuan 6000mah on the M30s
* A70 has 6mb memory vs 4mb on the M30s.
* A70 is slightly faster than the M30s for games (which I don't use a phone for).
* A70 has an integrated fingerprint reader in the screen (which doesn't work very well, vs the rear fingerprint reader of the M30s (which does work well).
* A70 is £100 more than the M30s (although the gap is smaller if ordering from elsewhere in the EU).

Battery life, size (smaller is better), camera and price are the key issues for me. How is the camera on the A70 and do any of you find it too big? How long does the battery last you? What I'm really after is a modern Lenovo P2 as that was a fantastic phone back in the day.

Thanks.

I find the camera awful in anything but bright light if I'm honest. Others will disagree but the noise reduction is super heavy handed and I think my old iphone 6S produced nicer pictures. I will upgrade this year simply due to the camera quality. Everything else I can live with.

Battery is a monster. Last a whole day with plenty of YouTube, Satnav and browsing.

Size is large, but not unmanageable, its light and pocketable still.

Thanks. The camera on both is a concern.

Yes, I am perfectly happy with the camera, no complaints. But if a camera is that important to anyone or they are a professional then they should simply be spending more on a premium phone. Pixel 3a perhaps ?

A70 doesnt have a notification led. Otherwise, my own experiance:
- performance is about the same as my old s8.
- Camera is poor, gcam helps a lot but it's a fudge. Gcam cant use the ultrawide sensornpn thebback, or switch to wide angle on the front so you need to use both apps.
- Fingerprint reader was terrible, now its perfectly acceptable after a few firmware updates. Not instant but close enough.
- Battery life is great, 7 hours on screen time regularly
- Gaming, not brilliant but acceptable in most cases.
- screen is brilliant. Doesnt have hdr, or the resolution of my old s8, but it doesn't matter. It's a fantastic screen on a mid range phone.

Thsnks all. So the camera on the A70 isn't great and it doesn't have a notification LED. Both have large screens. I think I may as well save the £100 and get the M30s for £229 then because it has a 6000mah battery.

In terms of the camera, I guess it depends on what your expectations are. I'd say that the camera is very good. I'm completely happy with the pictures it takes, I don't see what it is lacking. But for example if you've had an iPhone 11 Pro before say, and you're comparing to that then, then you'd obviously notice some differences.

I loved the P2 but I'm really happy that I got the A70. I tend to put my phone in flight mode overnight & that way, I normally get around 2 days on a single charge.

As others have said, it's not going to win any awards for camera performance & it does struggle with how to treat shots when moving from low light light to brighter light and vice versa. That said, I've been in Barcelona this weekend & in terms of taking a few holiday snaps, it really isn't all that bad, so I guess it boils down to expectation & how much you'll use the camera.

Of course there is the A71 now, with four cameras. Any better I don't know, but I'm already impressed with the A70 cameras as they are in any case.
