I have been using FE 9 beta 1 ever since antibyte released it and for me it has worked perfectly, very fast and the battery life is great along with the SF+UV kernel.

Unfortunately though, I think he has stopped development for it now as it has been ages since any kind of update, so that means that it doesn't include some of the other nice fixes and features that the 2.2 builds have now :(

Another reason to move to CM 2.2 now.

Yup, I really like the theme as well :D, it is the stock gingerbread one, although it is only for CM 2.2 at the minute, the maker will be porting it to eclair soon, I think, can't wait :D

Speaking of the gingerbread theme, he has just released a newer improved version and said "Eclair 2.1 version soon"

Revival of an epic thread :p

Yup, it is a very good android mobile once it is rooted and flashed with custom stuff, very quick as well, on CM 8.4, yonip V21, all FS to to ext 2 and samdroid apps2D.

And all will be even better once tomq3 gets his kernel and drivers done for 2.3 (written from scratch), hopefully this month or next :D

Only thing that really let's it down IMO is the low amount of RAM.
 
Ha, funny to see this thread bumped when i have like a week left on my two year contract.

I've asked that question various times, in various places throughout the time i've had this phone. The answer i've got everwhere has been no. But lately i've heard something about putting an image in a folder on the SD Card and booting into recovery mode. I believe this would still require the phone to be unlocked though, and i'd wait for somebody more experienced than i to explain in more detail (you can tell just how experienced i am by the fact that it's taken me two years to find this out).
 
My OH ended up with new one recently, someone found some old stock in a box. But Android 1.5 is a bit annoying, especially finding apps
etc.Most of the info I found suggests there is an offical update but not much info on how to get it on. Without using a custom rom and rooting the phone. Didn't really want to get into that tbh.

Nexus18, I'm running tom3q's cm7 rom on mine now :) it's a brilliant everyday rom and only really lacking a camera (some graphical bugs to iron out with openfimg updates but I don't really notice these as I don't try gaming on it any more lol) he's working on the camera right now, so probably only a few weeks probably then it'll be nearly 100% sorted - Funny seeing you saying 'this month or next' 8 months ago and it's still not done lol

The phone itself is massively low on ram and internal storage, but apps2sd fixes part of that

Other than that, it's perfectly usable phone with all the features you would want from an android phone really :) all be it more than a little on the slow side next to an S2 or similar...

I don't get to upgrade until August (or November if I move from Three) so I'm making the most of it while I'm stuck with it lol

apps2sd is 2.2 onwards only though. I don't really want to mess with it too much as its not my phone. I just keep getting asked how to resolve things on it.
 
Regarding the low RAM, i remember reading that physically it has 256MB, but due to stupidity on Samsung's part only 128MB of that is accessible by the OS. Was there ever a hack to get around that?

And since my contract is up soon i might as well try to mod it - is there anything in the image on the SD card then boot into recovery mode method, coming from stock 1.5? Might as well try to get a bit more life out of it.
 
I really want to try it out, but no camera, is a big no no for me :p I use my camera quite a lot and also use quite a few apps that need the camera as well. Hopefully when he does implement it, there won't be any bugs regarding it.


haha yeah, he has taken a LOT longer than what I and quite a few others expected! :p He has been working on it pretty much ever since 2.3 was released, lol and he still has quite a bit to do.


The RAM is a big killer for the mobile, if it had 512MB, it would be much better! Internal storage isn't a problem for me at all, even when I had like 50 apps installed and using samdroid apps2SD (the ext partition on SD card) with the dalvik cache moved to SD as well, I had like 110MB left.

I am pretty much done with the whole kernels, roms for this mobile now as the development is pretty much dead (currently on CM 8.4 and yonip 2.2 based kernel), except for toms work (which I have a funny feeling will be a long long long time till it is complete and once that is done, I can't see him bothering with ICS as there will be only a few left using a spica and if he does it just because he loves writing fresh code etc. it may be done by the time Android 6 is out :p :D).

However, if tom implements the camera and fixes a few remaining bugs by April 19th (when my contract ends :D), I will give it a try.


The spica is great for general stuff, the odd bit of light browsing, general light weight apps and general usage, but GOD, it is sooooo slow now compared to 5+months ago, don't know if this is due to the apps just becoming more demanding now (most of them bloated with useless features like the GO products now :() and/or the mobile and as you said with the lack of RAM etc. just not cutting it any more today, so the only thing my mobile gets used for now is, phone calls, texts, email, web, I don't bother with too many apps any more, especially games and I just use the stock apps mainly.


I could have upgraded since January, but I am not going back with 3 again as there reception wasn't the best for my area to start with and seems to have gotten even worst within the last few months, I am lucky if I even get 1 bar of signal for most of the time now :mad:, so I am just going back to o2 and would like to get the galaxy nexus (cba with rooting etc. any more and after reading about android 5 being in the works considering no other mobiles have ICS officially yet, I don't really want to be stuck on a mobile that no longer receives official support :rolleyes:), however, the price needs to drop first, hoping the GS 3 will do that and if it is still too expensive, I may just settle on the GS 2 (seems like the only other phone that is pretty much perfect out of the box regarding software and still one of the best hardware wise excluding the res of the screen and when Samsung dumps the support for it, it has a lot of developers/modders at XDA for it, should I choose to flash a stock ROM on).

But I have read a few comments saying that apps like bar code scanner etc. that require the camera don't work yet :(

How is the quality as well? And has tom3q mentioned when he will be bringing the update officially to his ROM?

It's not been officially included in Tom's rom, but the quality of the images is really good (with camera360 and pano) And no, the barcode scanner isn't working yet.

The developer of the camera patch is working with Tom now I believe to finalise the whole thing... about time really lol

They've nearly got a working ICS rom for us too... looking forward to that!

What's your username on samdroid by the way?
 
Yeah I was going to flash CM 7.3 and the camera patch earlier on there but I then seen that video recording isn't working either, so a no go for me still :(

Also seen that about the ICS ROM and criminal back again :) Hopefully that will be fully working a lot quicker since Tom has rewritten everything and so it will be much easier for him to work with the code now.

Unfortunately by the time 2.3 is to my standard, I will probably have a new mobile lol as my contract is up on April 19th, will probably get the GS 2 around the 15th. Going to be like going from a push bike to a Bugatti lol :D
