Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Would rather stay with the official stuff. Orange has no branding and just some apps in a folder that I don't touch so it's fine.

I'm pretty technical and have chipped consoles and updated the firmware on my 360 etc but it looked like a lot hassle when new updates come out.

If it was easy and there was a step by step guide that I could understand I'd be tempted but atm a lot of it is all jargon that just goes over my head.

I'll look into Titanium Backup, cheers.

Is this a problem with the sgs in general or is this my phone?

All of the websites I go on are ok but when I go onto phonearena.com the website freezes and then the site is very very slow/laggy.

Looks like there are quite a few flash elements and images on that site, may just be that slowing it down. What firmware and flash version do you have? I know on the firmware I'm on now (JPX) flash doesn't load by default, so sites like that shouldn't reduce it to a halt.

Just installing Darky's 6.0 ROM now - had 5.6 which was nice, so looking forward to see what the new one has in store :)

Let me know how you find it, I'm tempted to have a bash but it also means flashing a new kernel for 2e and so on so I'm wondering if it's really worth it at this stage. Especially as v 6.0 is based on JPX and that's already out of date, so to speak.

Right, been reading up a bit on this stuff.

I held down those 3 buttons and got that black menu with text to load (with different options like reboot, format sd card etc...)

Does this mean I can do whatever with the phone and I can't brick it? Or do I need to do something else first?

Hi Guys, just got my Galaxy S a few days ago and been keen to flash but its seem much more complicated compared to the HTC Hero I had before!

I have rooted using z4root but appear to be on 3e recovery which doesnt let me install unsigned roms so I think i need to flash back to 2e? Can someone point me towards a guide or let me know the steps I need to go through to do this pleeeeeease :D

I'm new to all this flashing phones malarkey and I see a lot of words and acronyms that mean nothing to me.

I followed carrot's tutorial earlier for using ODIN to get Froyo on my SGS but I was wondering if there are any other files/things I should do to my phone to improve performance etc?

From the "About Phone":

Firmware version
2.2

Baseband version
I9000XXJPP

Kernel version
2.6.32.9
root@SE-S611 #1

Build number
FROYO.XFJP7

I've been trying to reread this thread for so long that im seein "JPO" "JPX" "JPU" flying around in my eyes and no idea about the differences and what I want/need?! :)

Is there an idiots guide or someone who can explain in english? :D

I believe it has something to do with *#1234#

Try entering that in your dialer... not sure what to do from there though

On the stock boot of it (so to speak) quadrant gave me a score of 1142 which isnt great, however that is with the lagfix disabled (as it is by default on 6.0) so I'm going to enable it and try again to see how we go :)

*edit*

Enabled the lagfix and got 1489 which is better, but the whole thing feels very smooth thus far - I'll have a play for a day or two and see how it goes. Happy so far though :)

Guys, all your questions and whole load more besides are answered on the XDA forums, I strongly recommend that you sign up and have a read of the Samsung Galaxy S I9000 section. The general section within that should help most of you, there's also Q&A etc as well as numerous FAQs for your digestion. If you're happy with the phone, great, it's a brilliant device, but it can be made even better! You don't need anything as such, as long as your handset works :)

This is the number one place to get the info you need:

XDA Forums

A search will almost certainly show it's been asked there a million times before too. Hope that's helpful.

There's also a great XDA app on the android market so you can read whilst you're on your phone. It's based on tapatalk I think (wish OcUK used that too) and is easy to use.

There's a JPY as well now just to make it worse.

It's the most recent release and works very well, quite a bit faster than the JP7 you're on now. You can flash it with Kies or Odin. There's a lot of ground to cover with a general statement. Best to read all the FAQ and ask specific questions from there on. Yeah it's a wall of text, but there's not much to it when you get down to it.

Fornowagon - do you have a problem with phonearena.com as I posted a few earlier?

I have voodoo on at the mo.Do I need to disable that before I install this jpy rom?

:)

Thanks Alex.At least I know I'm not alone:)

Btw! check out 'screen filter'. Turns down the sgs brightness below minimum.

That one always gets posted up as a problem page. Go to your active task manager and monitor the RAM and CPU used. Mine is around 68MB and actually runs ok, but I'm sure if I stayed awhile it would start chugging. I've seen it pull well over 115MB on other builds, bit of an issue with 129MB spare at the best of times.

Always disable lag fixes before an upgrade unless you're sure the new kernel is the exact same file structure, even then...

Ok thank you. I might leave it on jpo then.
I don't want to do my phone in again.:)
Supercurio's JPY voodoo is based on Samsung pre-compiled kernels. Should be pretty good, nothing but the ext4 conversion. I'd be tempted to do it again myself, but honestly I don't see any lag with JPY as it is, not yet anyway. 2.2.1 is a nice improvement.

Simply create a folder on the root of the internal SD /voodoo/disable_lagfix and reboot it. you'll hear the voice converting files back to stock. Then just flash the new firmware as usual, if you use the Kies method it'll even leave all the programmes & data in place. Although I would recommend backing up apps, contacts etc then cleaning it all out reformat and reinstalling.
