Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Few things slightly bug me

There is no full screen calendar widget like I had on the hero
I dont like the orange font on the clock, infact not overally happy with the clock widget at all.
Messages staying in notification area even after I have read it

Few other niggles here and there

Ok . To get a full screen calender install launcher pro which has one.

Messages will clear from the notification area if you click the back button after you've read it.

I'm not sure about an orange font.i don't think mine has it

I've just updated from JF5 to JM8, and other than a new task manager (that you may already have in JG3), I've not noticed much difference.
JF5 was stable for me and so is JM8.

I would have updated to the latest 2.2 Froyo, but it strongly recommends backing up the EFS file first and that put me off.

Thanks matey, everything is running pretty bug-free, though the GPS lock isn't great on this software and it does lag sometimes. My quadrant score is about 800, but I can't get a lagfix on until I can get the 3-button recovery working and none of the methods I can see seem safe. Not worth the risk atm as I don't know enough.

I'm using Launcher Pro (btw, is the paid for version worth it?) and that's an improvement over touchwiz for sure. There are some great apps available. The only other thing is if there are any good places for wallpaper? There are a few good apps to get it, but it takes ages to go through them all. Would a 480x800 jpeg of anything be fine?

EDIT: Forgot to say, swype is awesome!

Everytime I try to run any "update.zip" app from the recovery console it always comes up that the "signature verification failed" is this because I'm on 2.2? Does anyone know of any way to root 2.2?

It's a steal at $3 for what it is. Bloke is re-writing the entire thing to be even faster as well, that's some serious dedication. I expect google to hire him by xmas.

I brought it for the widgets - the twitter client and calendar ones mostly. Easily worth the cash.

Sounds like something worth picking up then. Phone is >£300, so why not to make it even better!

Any other 'essential' paid for apps (or even free?)? On that note, any galaxy s users here with an appbrain list to look at?

EDIT: Bought Launcher Pro Plus, well worth it.

Yep can't use unsigned updates on 2.2. Only way is to flash another kernel. There's a modified 2.2 somewhere, I'll look for a link. Or the other method is to flash a 2.1 kernel, apply the root and put the 2.2 kernel back on.

EDIT:

1. Modified kernel > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108

2. I prefer this method even if it is a little more long winded.
Ends up with the stock 2.2 kernel back on, see readme> http://www.multiupload.com/ULQEGKORBE

With the updated software there has been 0 reports of bricked phones.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201

If you read to the end of that thread there's a lot of people with problems after that update, so the claim in the OP seems a bit out of date. That was the thread I'd found before though, thanks for the link however. I'd like to get a lagfix on at least, but I only got the thing yesterday, really don't want to brick it at this point, especially with no recovery mode. I hope you can understand my dilemma.

If I can pick your brains again chaps, more practical this time - what cases is everyone using? I like the pouch type cases as they don't add bulk to the actual phone, is anyone using one like that and what do they think of it?

I saw this one and thought it was pretty good, but concerned over the fit and whether it covers the speaker? The Galaxy S has that funny small bulge at the bottom.

These are the two I use. I prefer the flip case for the screen protection.

The second link looks cool, but I'm running JPH not JPK...

Thanks man. Sorted!

Also applied the lag fix which appears to make a noticeable difference now. Especially with Autokiller running.

I have the mesh case pictured above. I literally can't hold the phone if I take it off now, it just slips out of my hands! It doesn't offer any screen protect per se, but it means I can lay the phone down on its front without the screen touching the surface. I've also dropped my SGS countless times and there's not a scratch on it.

I also bought a Mobi pouch and a silicon case, both of which went on once then came straight off. The plastic mesh case offers some protection while still leaving the phone looking and feeling almost as intended.

I have the Casemate barely there case, which is pretty nice. Adds some heft to the phone without appreciably increasing its dimensions, and the plastic material feels comfortable and grips well.

It came with a screen protector, which I couldn't apply without loads of air bubbles trapped underneath it. So ended up peeling it off and getting a pack of 6 of the Qbit screen protectors from rainforest supplies. The third one I actually managed to apply without any air bubbles or dust particles trapper under it! The phone now feels and looks pretty mint IMO.

i use a similar case to the mesh one above but its solid instead of mesh and it adds a better feeling of quality to the phone itself and also has a soft feel to it which is quite grippy, its also purple which makes it look a bit better.

i also keep mine in an orange mofi case when its in my pocket just to make sure i dont get it mixed up with my keys as it gives a lot more protection then any screen protector could if i drop it getting it out my pocket.

I was just wondering how fast does your 3g go goes, Mine never goes from about 200 - 360kbs, Im using t-mob which I think is the reason its so slow. But my friend has t-mob with desire and she gets around 1mb, and my other friend with galaxy S get around 4mb but his on O2. So I was just wondering how fast are yours on T-mob.
