Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Im still running JPY - Is there any newer stock firmware worth upgrading to?

Depends how savvy/bothered you are. The newer JSx (3/5/7) firmwares are slightly nippier, but don't add much more than that. For the best improvement, you're looking at custom ROMs really, which, from your statement I can tell you're probably not comfortable with.

Short version: No.

Apologies if I'm thread derailing here, but this really didn't seem worth starting a new topic...

I've just picked up a Galaxy S on Orange, and I'm having some really stupid problems:

I can't get the e-mail function to work with hotmail - I got it all synced up (with Orange supports help, couldn't get it working before that), but whenever I open the mailbox now I have no e-mails, and it won't receive or send. I've tried playing with the sync options, and have tried wireless and 3G.

The app store throws up an error that it doesn't work over wi-fi...seriously? Surely that's not right?

Sometimes pages from the homescreen will open and close straight away - I have to tap into something else then come back for it to work.

I'm not fussed about CFW or anything like that, it's only for the wife and I really don't plan on commiting huge amounts of time to it, I just want the %$&@ing thing to work. Anyone shed any light for me?

They probably replaced the stock android email app with their push service application. Other orange branding probably exists.

The best thing I can recommend is

- root
- then unlock (for free!) using code generator
- flash I9000XWJS7 ROM (the latest official ROM)

After you flash the ROM, it will be unrooted and like a retail phone with the phone as Samsung intended with the lag fixed. It should be a zero maintenance phone from that point on for your wife.

Right - GPS and the SGS.

Last night me and my mate did a rigorous test of the GPS using Google Navigation, Maps and Co-Pilot by driving to Macclesfield (we were gigging there).
The distance there & back was around 58 miles of City roads and lots of winding country roads.
I had him switching every 2 mins between the 3 maps and especially when we came to crossroads or junctions.
Switching to Google would often put us in a field or 50 yards either side of a designated marker (crossroads/junction).
Switching to Co-Pilot was bang on every time just like TomTom.
The Co-Pilot GPS marker NEVER left the road unlike the Google products that had a mind of their own.
I am now 100% convinced the GPS is down to software being used (but there could still be an issue between Google & SGS because other phones work OK!!).
I have now installed Sygic Mobile Maps 10 and as soon as I turned that on the GPS marker was bang on in my house where Google has to think about it for a while and then put me in the next road.

Nice findings dmpoole, that can give us other SGS users some hope. You should post your findings to XDA, probably here (not sure if that's the latest thread though). It may help the community develop a more robust fix.

Cheers for that. Along with the GPS, the WiFi actually sucks...Samsung....:(

wow i have great coverage on my wifi. gps is good but not as good as my old hero.
really odd how diffrent people get different results. wonder if its the different firmwares.

dmpoole for gmaps vs tomtom/Co-pilot are they capable of marking your off the road like google maps is? or if they are they might just have higher fault allowance for locking you to the nearest road?

I find the gps on my sgs next to useless, only get the occasional lock when out hill walking/driving and its no use for accuracy. Have found my old bt gps unit that I think I can use with most apps through mock locations but I really shouldnt have to do this. I think its a hardware problem with my phone as forgetting mapping programs gpsTest shows that my signal is useless and locks are even worse.

Ok let me know the results as it would be useful to have a satnav on my phone that dont get lost if there is more than 2roads on the screen.

Well at home my gps does suck, doesnt even lock at all but i live on like a hill so its just lame, but all over london I always get lock now and works really well.

As on my previous post - #2585 ^
Still having annoying issues with my phone & now the battery lasts less than a day! only use it for about 2 hrs a day other than that its idle in my locker at work.

Just downloaded adv task killer to see if that does anything have another battery that i carry about also its just pathetic now ....

Phone is via Orange (no updates via kies) but its rooted and unlocked (on 02)

in your locker you may have a poor signal thays causing the phone to search a lot. this will zap your battery.
