Samsung Galaxy S24 Family Thread

They are the best on the market imho

Agree. However caveat that with "best slim case on the market", as there are better cases for protection clearly. Pitaka are really just a step up from a skin in terms of drop and screen protection (lack of lip).

I'm on my second Pitaka case having used one on a OP8Pro and the Galaxy S23. Slippery, hard to take off, expensive - but they look amazing, barely change the footprint of the phone and give access to the original buttons and ports. It's a nice trade-off in comparison to a big bulky leather case. However, you will at best be replacing the screen protectors, at worst replacing the screen/back glass should you drop it.

That doesn't sound good re the Pitaka casem at best screen protector, t worst back glass? Surely the case should be stopping phone from damage?

I've never broke screen in Pitaka case having used it for ~6yrs. Ive dropped multiple phones during this period and all were fine(I am not using screen protector). So it does provide protection over nothing - kevlar is quite shock absorbing even if very thin.

there's no real shock absorbption in pitaka cases or any kevlar cases for that matter.. but my thinking is that most cracks happen due to direct impact to the back glass etc which these cases will cover. I had one on my pixel 5 for 2 years and 0 issues, case got damaged, phone didn't. Case was still functional even with a chunk missing on a corner.

It's a trade-off. Generally along lines of:

Most bulk = most protection
Least bulk = least protection

Some are going to be better than others in terms of durability and design (honeycomb, air pockets, etc).
It's all about the material between the surface being hit and the phone. Some are better at absorbing the force and distributing across the device than others. I dropped my S22U so many times in the official leather case, and while chunks were taken out of it, the phone screen and protector usually survived. I say usually, because my wife's S22U screen smashed to bits on one drop with a DBrand Grip case, which I considered to be "better" at the time for impacts. Must have been the 'magic' angle.

Front lips are also very useful for placing the phone face down on things, keeps grit away from the screen. The Pitaka has a very minimal one, which is then negated as soon as you put a glass screen protector on, hence why the screen protectors break as they then take impact direct. Bulkier cases, with larger lips take that impact and generally protect them better from my experience.

Good comparison on the topic of the s24 ultra and moving subjects with photos , encountered this myself .

I'm really struggling with the cameras on the S24U, especially when it comes to low light and moving subjects. The OnePlus 8 Pro this replaced was far more consistent as a point and shoot camera. I was fooled by the YouTube reviews and have now missed the 14 day return window.

I have 124 photos in my camera album and 332 photos in the recycle bin for context on how many shots I'm unhappy with. The camera apps default to ISO priority instead of shutter priority, hence the naff performance with moving subjects.

Expert RAW is a confusing app, it appears to merge multiple exposures and applies processing to the image with no way of disabling it. The initial image taken in this app looks fantastic, then it processes the image and it turns out rubbish.

Pro mode again can yield some better results, but requires setting up for each scene, post processing etc. I'll stick to using my DSLR in those scenarios.

I've had a handful of superb photos so I know the phone is capable. Just feels like the software needs a lot of work to make it more consistent. I'm probably living in false hope on this one..

Anyone found any use for the Galaxy store credit? I seen someone mentioned buying Dead Cells but that looks as if it has been removed from the store.

Fully agreed, I'm not sure why Samsung seem hesitant to fix this issue.

It's been well known for the last few generations , if people are paying £1400 they want performance to be at least equal to phones that are sub £1k.

Maybe they cannot fix it and it's the 200mp sensor that's the issue , it's a bizarre situation really.

It's only now some of the YouTubers that do detailed real life photos comparisons and real users are the issues coming out, you really cannot trust a lot of the early reviews. Thing people need to remember is they want hits and they are also getting a free phone and invite to an event from Samsung, don't want to offend their paymasters

I bought Spongebob, Spellforce, Titan Quest and Iron Marines. Stardew Valley is great too if you don't have it. You can also buy some nice video wall papers.

S21 & S22 Ultra had a 108MP sensor rather than the 200
