Samsung RF711 Graphic issue.

Sorry for the curve ball, getting mixed up, ccc is not Nvidia technology, doh!
There is a mega thread out there; same symptoms for the Samsung series 7 chronos machine; they're not a happy bunch: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sam...ush-samsung-implement-fixed-mode-bios-21.html but that is for AMD cards. It talks in one point about Nvidia and "Optimus Switching", so far though all I can tell is that's another "auto sensing" tech that should bring up the Nvidia card if the graphical load goes high enough. The chronos people, similar to us so far, can't find a "switch" in their set-up...

Is this a daft suggestion; what about running up something that will put a high graphics demand on the machine? Maybe another modern game? And using something like gpuz to monitor activity, then, knowing that the Nvidia card has "engaged" fire up C&C and see if it runs OK? Not sure how it will perform under those circumstances but it would confirm that the 540m does run the game OK if it can be made to engage.

Nvidia have this product:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/system_monitor.html
Manual here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/LO_nforce_esa_control_panel.html are all roads going to lead to dead ends though? In the downloads section for the install it just jumps to a load of drivers, although I may be going search blind. The manual details lots of options, but does caveat it all by saying the features you can access are dependent on the manufacturer of your machine interfacing with their monitor. The search continues I think.

Well, I don't have a choice and wait till Intel release a fix for the old'ish games...

If i knew Optimus was gonna give me problems i wouldn't have bought this laptop. But hey it was a good value for money for it's specs but sooner Intel release the drivers the better then this laptop will be worth it.

I'm brain dead listening to this chap for the first 7 minutes, but he explains this extremely well, but do jump to the 7th minute onward. It tells you why its not the right "concept" to expect a physical switch, or to think you can disable the Intel stuff, there is symbiosis going on, you can set by app though which GPU runs for it:
http://www.netbookchoice.com/2010/0...g-officially-detailed-heading-to-ion-2-video/.
Can you see this stuff? Can you make C&C run via the 540?

Are the features not already present? Looks like Optimus is simply part of the card/driver installation so you should already have it on board...thats why the Optimus install link just goes to the driver list; the 540M is an Optimus enabled card. Those two vids explain how to "force" an app to run via the 540M. Can you see any of the options described?

Quote from Samsung's blurb specifially for the RF711: "1 GB of dedicated graphics memory and the NVIDIA® Optimus™ GeForce GT 540M graphics engine".

So Optimus is already onboard. Stealthy little beast though, working automatically in the background to give max battery life, handshake with the Intel GPU, and never really bother you, hence no obvious switches. It should seamlessly (within 300 milliseconds) detect any graphical load that the Intel GPU can't handle and step in to help. Thats the concept anyway.

You can however ask it to fire up per app.

Of course sales and tech review talk is worth nothing if the reality is the laptop doesn't react as described.

Hi, Yes I do have a choice but that doesn't help regarding my issue. I will send you a picture and show you. I have tried switching graphic over and still nothing.

Good to see the options are persent, but if they don't deliver a cure then they're no use...so how come the VGA-out delivers a perfect result? I assumed the 540M was driving it hence the idea to force it to run the game on board. Is it the other way round? Is the Intel chip in control of the VGA-out? You did say you'd run it on Integrated Mode? And it still doesn't work? Have you checked the VGA-out running either option too? Does it work on both or just one?

Hmmm...possibly clutching at straws here but...go back to Ryan Shrout's video: http://www.netbookchoice.com/2010/0...g-officially-detailed-heading-to-ion-2-video/ Starting at around 10:50 he's explaining how to force the 540 to run for particular apps or be on all the time. However, from about 11:50 to 13:40 he illustrates how it accepts a request to run and may look like its accepted it, but it hasn't. He has the benefit of a monitor from Nvidia that is giving him the feedback he needs to understand those inconsistencies (we don't have that monitor which is why I suggested gpuz to try and do similar - however because this "false behaviour" entails other apps running try it first without that).

In your screenshot above you are on the Overclockers forum whilst selecting the Nvidia card which will have made Optimus choose Intel graphics initially as the website is low order stuff...Ryan is showing that doing that whilst your browsing or have any other app running may not result in the card firing up. Have you tried switching to the 540 with absolutely nothing else running except C&C?

Hi, Yes I have tried to shut everything down in process and choose Tiberian Sun.

I even disabled everything in msconfig start up to test and still nothing. I have given up now... Tried everything that I could think of and tried all the settings 1 by 1 on graphic settings, Still nothing so this issue will need to be solved by Intel cos the problem lies with Intel.

I just dont understand when I plug in external monitor into VGA port the game works fine but not on my laptop monitor... Strange innit?

Saw the response too, good of Genoma to spend some time on this, but my assumption about the 700g being similar enough was off beam. However, given the link in post #21 I did earlier on don't jump to the conclusion that an AMD card will be any better at this, I think there are 65 pages or more of unhappy users on that thread!

If getting the game to work is important enough then you have a case to go back to the shop and insist on an exchange to a different make that will run it. I'd go as far as insisting they let you load and run the game on any machine you consider might be a good candidate prior to doing the swap. Not sure how far you'll get with that but worth a try. Its a lot of money, despite the VAT back, for a machine that doesn't deliver what you expected.

Have you got Minecraft? That game uses opengl whcih I believe can a problem with ATI switch graphics, maybe also Nvidia. Anyway, see what fps you get when playing on the LCD and compare that to external monitor. If the external is faster then you'll know for sure that the external is using the dedi card if its fps is much faster. Also, try running Furmark on LCD and external, reading one of lowrez's posts above it goes on about Furmark not even starting on some systems with switch graphics. So if if does start on yours when connected to the external monitor then you'll know again that external connection means dedi card only.

I did take it back to the shop, The simply said there's nothing wrong with my Laptop and wouldn't offer me a refund nor a swap either... PC World. but yet they couldn't fix the issue themself when they had my laptop for 4 days.
