Samsung SATA - Removable?

Hi there,

Under the controllers in device manager, it has NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA Controller the drive is set to to Serial ATA Generation 1 - 1.5G (with the only other option being PIO)

My motherboard is the DFI-Ultra D and I am using the latest SATA drivers off of their website. I believe they are "Silicon Image" with the Version downloaded off net being 3116 I think...I will confirm in a mo...

Thanks....

SATA Drivers:
Same board as me - nice and easy. The board does not use SiI controllers, only nVidia ones. Only the SLI-DR and Ultra-DR use the SiI controller. The drivers are the nV IDE SW drivers from the chipset package.

Head into BIOS - under Standard BIOS settings, you'll see the HDU's listed. Hit enter over any HDU's you have and make sure everything is set to Auto. Then load up windows, Go to IDE/ATA ATAPI controllers under one of the two Serial ATA controllers (in properties) your HDU controller should be listed. Make sure all boxes are ticked where it says the Generation of SATA and make sure that let BIOS set transfer mode is selected.

If all this is done, and there is still poor performance, I'd hazard a guess that the drive is faulty as the nF4 SATA controller natively supports SATA HDU's remapped to IDE mode (should be no loss in performance).

If all else fails, reinstall the Chipset driver 6.70 and ensure that the nV IDE SW driver is installed and that the nV Firewall is NOT.

Make sure all the jumpers are removed from the drive? - clutching at straws here. I can't think of anything else.

Oh no, wait, what about using Samsung's drive utility and making sure there is no form of acoustic management enabled?

Hi there,

OK, I just did a low level format usin gthe hutil utility and it had no errors. I set up the hard drive using the samsung disk manager. I loaded the SATA drivers with the "F6" during Windows XP installlation, and I am still getting bad performance.

I think my hard drive could be bust?

Thanks...

Hi there,

Am I doing anything wrong during the setup of the drive? Should I not be using RAID drivers. When i did do the whole F6 thing I loaded the Non Raid drivers and the stuff that had "Required" by it. I have the latest BIOS and I got the latest raid drivers? I have loaded Chipset Drivers.

Sometimes it cant even complete this test....

Hi there,

I have just run the Hutil program again, the self diagnostics bit and i am getting quite a few Ecc Error. I am also getting Busy not clear errors.

What is that and can it be fixed? I am told a zero fill will fix it....what is that and how do i run one?

Thanks...

Hmm, you have SMART errors then? If that is the case, just RMA the thing because it is causing a lot of grief.

Hi there,

To be honest it will cause me more effort and greif to RMA the thing, because i would have to get some suitable packaging and then have to spend an hour getting to the post office as there is no local one and then quewe for hours at the post office to send.

That is why I would rather try and fix it at home because i could get on with some work whilst it is installling or doing its stuff.

But in the end, if I have to RMA the thing i will.

Thanks...

Oh gawd - well zero write the drive then and have another go. If you have any SMART errors that will not go away though, then the drive has to be sent back.

Hi there,

OK, ill do that. Should I run the test straight after I have done the low level format? Or should I like install windows and stuff first?

Thanks...

Hi there,

I have just done the low level format and checked the test and I still get an Ecc error

Looks like I am going to have to spent ages at the PO then.

Thanks for your help!

Hi there,

Just thought i would ask, what is the difference between the "Zero Fill" utility of the Samsung Disk Manager and the "Low Level Format" utility on the Samsung Hutil program?

Thanks...
