Sandisk memory cards - a LOT of fakes out there

I emailed him and in a polite way told him not to waste his time sending it to me if its a fake.

See what we get back.

Well I had a reply from my seller:

"it is genuine not faked. please test it on your device, if there is problems, please let me know.

Dave"

I've responded and said that I've tested it and it's slower than a proper card, hence I want a refund. Will see what he comes back with, luckily I think I have the upperhand what with Paypal protection etc..

He's obviously been caught, and he's still making it out to be real :(

Situations like this are annoying. You should be OK to get your money back, but you can't give him the negative feedback he deserves - because he'll just return it!

Well, I've got mine and I'll get some photos of it up soon.

The big question, is it real?

Errr, not sure. I think it isn't but it's a very good (copy).

The packaging is spot on the one shown here:

http://martybugs.net/articles/images/sandisk_box.jpg

The II isn't in line with the Ultra. The copyright symbol is too small. The quality of paper isn't what I would expect. No hologram. The lifetime warranty is very dark.

It all screams fake.

As soon as I saw the box I thought, you're going back!

Then I got to the CF card itself. It doesn't have the extra TM symbol. It does say SDCFH. The patent numbers are correct. It does have a serial number. And most suprisingly I can register that serial number on Sandisks website!

I'm well confused!

Any suggestions on how best to test the speed? I've got two Extreme III cards (that are real) but I'm not sure it's a fair test of speed against them.

Also, TomWilko if you take delivery of yours I would be interested to see if our serial numbers are the same. My e-mail is in my trust if you want to do this off the board.

UPDATED:

From the original link posted....

Performance
I compared the performance of the genuine and fake cards by putting them into my Canon EOS 350D camera, with the following configuration:
manual mode
exposure set to 1/4000 seconds
manual focus
raw mode only
the lens cap on
burst mode
I then took 6 photos in burst mode, and timed how long it took the camera to flush the buffer to the compact flash card after the last photo.

The genuine card took approximately 6 seconds, while the fake card took almost twice as long, approximately 10-11 seconds.

I've just done the same comparing my 1GB Extreme III, 2GB Ultra II and a very old Viking 256MB CF I found knocking about.

The 1GB Extreme III did it in around 6 seconds and both the others did it in around 11 seconds.

Looks to be fake to me!

Going to e-mail the supplier and send him the link see how he likes seeing that! I might e-mail SanDisk as well with the serial number of the card and details of where I got it.

Gord.

The fake labels do look like the type that you print yourself. The genuine article looks quite a bit different once you can compare them.

Will do mate, interested to see this.

Just want to say a big thanks to making this thread and those that have added the their experiences to it. I was all set to purchase a 2gb Ultra II from ebay this week, i think i will buy only from a reputable warehouse.

I recently bought 2 x Sony Pro Duo cards off an auction from 2 different sellers, one of the cards is fine but the other went back.

For those cards suspected of being a fake, Rob Galbraith mentions ways of detecting the card's internal ID, which should be a bit harder to mimic....

Link is here.

From Windows, the setupapi.log flile seems to detail the card's own ID, and the "hardware" tab in control panel will sometimes report the info when the card is in a cardreader.

I'm sure there must be a little util somewhere that'll report this info, though......anyone any ideas?

I tried reading the information from the log yesterday but couldn't find anything of use in there (for both my original and fake one).

I've just got off the phone with Sandisk who very quickly can confirm if it is fake or not and mine is.

Sandisk's UK number is 0207-3654-193.

UPDATE:

Just got this e-mail:

Hi, we got it from a registered company in UK. They told us this is OEM product. Please return to us, we will fully refund you. Sorry for all the trouble and we will ask the company about it. Thank you

Think I will be doing the same when I get back tonight and pick this card up. Might even consider taking it further after with Ebay but will have to see.

Basically commiting fraud are they not?

Tom

You can report counterfeit goods through ebay. How much they would do I'm not so sure. I'm going to wait for my refund and then decide what to do.

Mine arrived this morning, unfortunately at work so won't be able to tell until I get back. Any chance ^^Gord^^ you could post your serial number up on here for comparison?

Sure, it's AS10605DH or it could be ASI0605DH. Hard to tell if it's an I or a 1.

Sandisk tells me that the format is wrong (I asked for both) and it's fake.

Where is the serial number located as my CF card has no serial number...?
