Sandy Bridge Reviews

Wow...they really have crippled overclocking in non K chips....

You can only raise the FSB from 100 to 103 in non K chips....but you can raise the multiplyer to 47 and get 4.7GHZ with the K chips!!!!

It looks like there are no Core i3 K series CPUs ATM. This could mean that unless you spend over £100 for a K series Core i5 then overclocking for socket 1155 CPUs will be limited.

No more fun with overclocking anymore then. Anybody can increase a multiplier and vcore but where's the fun in that? Personally i like tweaking all the settings in my rig to get the best out of it.

I suppose this is bad news for the cheap chip overclocked like mad types, but for those happy with the price of the K series their potential looks great.

So the max you can get is 103x47 = 4.84 GHz?

Why is the base clock now 100 MHz when it's 133 MHz for LGA1366? Is it 100 MHz for LGA1156 also?

Not sure about your math?

103x47=4841 Or am i wrong ?

I love this bit
PAGE5:Sandy Bridge is forced to limit overclocking My arse! Intel are forced to pull down the pants of the consumer and SLAP there arse! T0**ERS

The whole point of overclocking a CPU for many people is to increase the performance of a relatively cheap CPU so it can trade blows with a more expensive one.

OTH,if you are spending over £125 on a CPU you would expect it to already have decent performance in the first place.

(no nothing about this type of stuff)

spending around a grand on a new computer is january for this, is it still worth waiting for?

considering its going to be at the same price point as the i7? why not go for it, im going to as long as i can run it at 4.5ghz minimum, i dont even think its worth waiting on the Z platform to use fsb overclocking as the 2600k will be fine, i cant really see it going past 4.7.

though what is weird is how did intel and other reviewers get the 2600k to 5GHZ? if the multi only goes to 47, what am i missing?

the most intel could have done was 103x47=4841GHZ so im guessing thats what they ran it at and called it 4.9GHZ on air.

4841GHZ is still awesome though! pair it with 4GB 2133mhz ram and a gtx 580 what more could you possibly need?

Rage, why not :)? I'm going for the k series so I can OC the CPU.

I'm buying it for the 32nm architecture :).

Looks like it will be a killer CPU... Quite pricey though (not compared to some!!!)

Man those power savings are insane! 159w for a full system under load? Huh!

On the intel road map the gulftown 970 is put above sandy bridge in a "performance" category and a new 990X takes over from the 980X. Does this mean that a current 970 will out perform 2600K????

Some of you really do need to read the full preview on Anandtech - some of the non K series will have partially unlocked multipliers which is fair enough and the K series will start at the same price as the Core i5 760 it's hardly a black day for overclocking fans. It also looks like the GPU is as good as the Radeon HD5450 which ain't bad.

Must admit the only thing I don't like about these new chips is the onboard GPU, I realise this will be cheaper for Intel over the long run to produce/sell but I can't help but feel it does nothing good on board the chip for us guys with our P67 MB's and separate graphics cards...

Anyway I'm obviously wrong as reviews are saying otherwise :).

It will most likely be i5 2500K for me. Am new to the whole OCing thing, but I guess I will be just as hooked as the rest of you :)

Sidenote: Dark_Angel: Is that quote from Nietzsche in your sig accurate, or is it something that you have modified? Just remember that passage as it was translated into Swedish, where the latter part goes something like "If you gaze/stare long enough into the abyss, the abyss will start to gaze/stare back at you".
