SAPPHIRE RX 480 NITRO NOW AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDER AT OVERCLOCKERS UK (WORLD FIRST) !!!

Pokes head in AMD thread, fan bois. Pokes head in Nvidia thread, fan bois.

As someone who literally has no preference over graphics card make it's getting hard to decide what to buy.

I was in the same boat. TBH, there's not much between the 1060 and the 480. I went for the Nitro OC because I got the pre-order in early and 250GBP was my budget.

However, I did originally aim to get a 1070 but Nvidia's pricing put paid to that.

No complaints with the 480 @ 1080p though. It's maxed everything I've thrown at it so far.

I've got a 4GB sitting in my case now, clocked up to the same speed as the 8gb on core and memory. Runs great at 1080.

Sounds good. Looking forward to getting mine. Gonna be used at 1440p, but I don't do that much PC gaming any more and I'm happy to turn settings down loads. If it doesn't do the job I'll put the PC IN the lounge and do 1080p on the telly.

Can't see it being an issue, though. Right now all I want to run is Overwatch.

Doesn't really matter about no SLi on the 1060 though does it, as Dx12 is mGPU, so you are still going to be able to buy 2x of them to use, instead of their more expensive 1080, so them disabling SLi on them to force you to do that, isn't going to work is it.

They could always pay the devs not to add it i spose :p

Go to a more general gaming forum outside this place to get more objective impressions and advice. I'm seeing that hardware enthusiast boards tend to have a lot more tribalistic attitudes about things. The average PC gamer isn't so invested in which megacorp they are 'rewarding' or whatever dumb arguments people make to justify their fanboyism.

The average gamer usually does not have a clue about hardware though so it's a double edged sword. In fact the average gamer usually only knows about one brand called Nvidia. They might just have heard about AMD's shocking drivers. I know plenty of average gamer's and hardware knowledge ain't there strong point. Was just yesterday an average gamer was asking me what he had to upgrade to get his I7 920 rig to be decent in the newest games. Managed to find him a second hand r9 290 vapor x for £120 which should see him good until he upgrades his full Rig.

Sadly all you'll find outside of the enthusiasts forums are people saying, Geforce is best! Amd cards catch fire could heat your house in the winter and have rubbish drivers. That's because they've read it on facebook.

You wont have to turn settings down loads. Everyone is so hung up on Ultra, games look great at High settings. I'm playing GTA V and it defaulted to a mix of High/Very High, population/distance sliders maxed, with AA at 1440p. It looks gorgeous and I'm getting over 80fps.

Damn, MSI really milking it there. To be fair, their cooler is pretty savage at keeping the 480 and 10x0 series in line.

But £300....

At £300 a 1060 is probably a better buy.. but if you want to keep the budget down, the Sapphire Nitro for £250 overclocked slightly and fans tweaked to reduce noise is going to net you better than stock GTX 980 performance.

The main issue with the RX 480's is temp limitations. Mine will run at 1420, but at that point, with the fan cranked to max, it's still exceeding 85c and throttles a lot. I've settled on (for now):

1380 @ 1100v
Fan min/max: 800/1950 rpm
Power target: +50% (max)
Mem clock: 2150 mhz (not stable at 2200+ and I've not tried increasing voltage on mem yet).

Overall this gets me a score of ~14,300 or in real terms (and the only game i'm playing) Overwatch 1080p @ 90-110 FPS with the "Epic" preset. At this level it is louder than I would like, but its not excessive and with a headset on barely noticable.

DPD's just dropped this off at reception, now it's got to sit next to me until I get home. This is going to be a long afternoon...

I'll post Firestrike and Time Spy at some point tonight.
