There isnt much point in insuring under your own name at 17, the premiums are ridiculous. At 18/19 the premiums dropped significantly for me, even though I still have 0NCB, which made it possible to insure under my name.

2L Ford Focus Ghia, 17, £38/month. :p

(The cheapest quote I could get on a VTR at 17 was a tad over £2000. Not worth it, they aren't even that quick... and not a car I'd like to have an accident in).

Only if your not the main driver of the car otherwise this is insurance fraud!

I would be paying upto 1k for insurance, and my dad would be named on it aswell

I got quoted £2000 for a 1.4 Escort and £2500 for a 1.6 Honda Civic.

Good luck getting a boy racer car for under £1000, you probably wotn even get that on TPFT.

But that Focus quote is blatently not in your name and thus illegal, so why not compare like for like? The 2.0 focus was a bit more to insure than a VTR, a lot more to buy a nice example and no where near as fun ;)

Oh yea, what a beast, green and everything + it changes gear without using the clutch, stunning!

Best one was when he took it up the hill and it stopped!

Clarksons videos were entertaining, but always exaggerated - most cars can change without a clutch if you know how to do it, and as for not being able to go up a hill, I'm sure it would have managed if he dropped a couple of gears :)

How do you know it's illegal?

Erm because if it is as cheap as he says it is, then he is a named driver - no questions. Now if the car is his, and he is the main user of the car - this is insurance fraud. If he is just insured on his dads car for little useage when his dad isn't using it then that is fine but hardly anything to brag about being insured on it for so cheap. I'm insured on my mums brand new 2.0 £18500 Grand Scenic for nothing, not a penny.

Thats about 400 quid a year - I would put money on you not having a proper insurance policy.

Let me guess, you are pretending its your Dads and insuring it in his name? :p

- If he said he wasn't the main driver and he was, it would be insurance fraud.

- If he said he was the main driver and was still insured under his Dad's name (yes this is possible), it wouldn't be insurance fraud.

You can save a lot of money insuring yourself legally through your parents. This is how I intend to insure a 530d for £800 v £2000+ next year. You just need to be open and honest with the insurance company and it will be legal.

True, don't see why insurers would give you a discount for that though. And also you don't get your no-claims ;)

Well, im planning on getting a Saxo VTR as first car, its insurance group 7, is their any hope of getting cheap insurance?

I'm afraid to say mate, that insurance for our catagory is v high :( I drive a .900 Fiat Cinquecento and ive had my provisional 6 Months... my insurance will apparently go up from £86 a month once ive passed, and on a car like yours you're gonna be looking at a high price m8

If i may say so, for a first car i think you are aiming too high - go for something sensible, not that a 1.8 isnt sensible, but im talking sensible to insure.

the 1.8 will again have the same problem as the vtr insurance wise

Also, since editing isnt working for me the last two times ive tried.

Age makes a huge difference on insurance, a quote for myself on my car atm at 17 cost around £400 more than at 18

(2.0l 154bhp Hyundai Coupe F2)

total is 1749 for myself as main driver, mother as named and fully comp
