SB-E [C2] Stepping

Yeah I was goin to get the 17000 but they didn't have any 32gb sets in when I got mine, also read that the benefits drop off after 1600mhz, so I impulsed it lol

you are right about the benefits dropping off, I know it was overkill, but so is X79 and Im hoping that by going to 17000, Im future proofing my RAM for Ivybridge-E
Time will tell..

If I had had my case I think I would have done the same. I have a box of bits sitting in the lounge, didn't put them away as I enjoyed being able to see my bits even if I couldn't do anything with them!

That is a nice spec there, be interesting to see what clocks you get with all 8 RAM filled, I have gone for 32Gb of the 17000C9 G.Skill matched sets, so in a similar situation..

well all I have to do is choose the case now
corsair 650D, or 600T or or swallow the pricier option and get the TJ07

gonna sleep on it I think and see how I feel tomorrow - enough excitement for one day!!
I've been quite ... not to dampen the mood but I've waited the best part of a year for the 8 core processor - OK I'm willing to put up with the fact they turned off 2 of the cores but I can definitely wait a little longer for a Retail.

Not overkill! on RAM :D

I'm going for 8*8GB (2 x quad channel) only 1600 though - will be pulling one or two ram disks out of this

And with respect to a case, mine is being built in a P280(antec) water cooled + 2 * 79(50[or]70) - Will be creating a project log once I have most of the bits and pieces which should be end of next week (fingers crossed).

You have to set a limit somewhere! The money you save on the less important bits is the money you can spend on the actual tech.

EDIT:
Crazy price on 3930K at OCUK - wow bargain at 431.99 SO TEMPTED!

:mad::mad: Typical - I paid 467 for mine only yesterday - mind you, I've spent £1460 @ ocuk on this build, so I don't s'pose it will make a real difference in the scheme of things, just annoying.

I did like the P280, but the lack of a window and ideally Id want 2 x 120.2 rads meant that I discounted it. I will watch out for your build log..
I have narrowed my choices down to 650D, 600T or a TJ07.

Gibbo, do you know of any policy with Intel for swapping the C1 for C2? I only ask you as I bought my chip from yourselves and just wondered if you had heard anything.

Google other forums and you will see that people are managing to do this

Cheers, will take a look about.

would be gratefull for any info regarding this aswell, my chip has the odd bug where it wont overclock using the multiplier, its not really working like a K chip!, apparently its going to be fixed with a later bios update, but if i can swap it for a newer stepping then that would be better.

There is some speculation on this.

However replacement only available through Intel directly. Give Intel UK a call

Im not sure about this!

From the reading I've done this bug you mention is reported as affecting the 3960X only. Have you tried cooling around your CPU? are you on air?

Me too, I tried the webnote approach (to save the £36) but computer said no :-(

it actually worked better on air but am on water now and cant overclock using a multi higher than 35!. I was using a multi of 46 and 48 when on air although i sometimes ran into the bug if it was cold enough.

it isnt the end of the world as i can use the base clock but its quite limiting. it does seem to affect a small number of 3930k's as i've found a few other with the same problem in various forums. i got really lucky and also bought the motherboard that seems to have the worst problem with this, the same cpu can have this problem on some boards and not with others others, the msi x79 boards are the worst affected, they have been working with intel to resolve it, it seems to be an issue with the cpu that they think they can fix in the microcode but so far they havent managed it.

some info in here which is the same problem i'm having.
