Scam? Seems like a good one if it is.

still sounds like a scam to me.
when the potential buyer starts proposing the payment method in the first communication, it always makes me suspicious. they always seems to want to tie up the whole deal in one or two steps.

also just because he hasn't mentioned shipping agents yet, doesn't mean he won't very soon.
i suggest you ask for cash.
he may be able to arrange a cash withdrawal from a uk bank if he arranges it in advance. i suggest you look into that. if he loses total interest then it's probably a scam.

Money coming in as an international transfer will really upset your bank if it is fraudulent. I cannot remember off-hand having sent any money back as a fraudulent payment but it is worth speaking to the bank first and getting them to take advice from their fraud office.

at the end of the day, the car is on your driveway here in England. Even if he doesn't pay up then he still won't have the car, so I see no problem. Obviously you will need to clarify with the bank that the money will remain in your account.

It seems legit to me. And any doubt can be easily cured with a phonecall if not.

Well there is that golden rule in the FAQ. "If you have to ask..."

But what ever you do, for the love of god don't take Paypal.

if he's genuine why don't you tell him to get his arse over the UK and pay in cash which can be paid straight in to the bank and checked by the counter staff?

i don't think it's a scam, but i'd contact him again over the phone to be sure, or get freefaller to have a chat with him :)

immatriculation is registering the car on french plates, which costs a fair bit more than in the UK.

as has been mentioned above, the pound is worthless, which makes for bargain cars if buying with €

he said he doesn't like travelling with £16,000 in cash, which is a fair point
he would also lose a hefty amount taking out £

And if Will deems the buyer to be ok, then it turns out that it is a scam.....then what?

but eidolon will get the money before franck picks up his car. as long as they agree that the money has been transferred and is safe, all should be well.. maybe :p

A good con artist excels at one thing.....fooling people.
I wouldn't involve any friend/family member and base the decision to deal with them or not on the advice of said family member. It's a recepie that tends to involve grapes.....of the sour variety.
Speak to your bank, that's the only way to be sure IMHO.

Tell him to bring a travellers cheque which he can cash in the UK. Then he doesn't carry the cash on the journey, changes the cheque for cash at bank and then pays the OP.

Looks legit to me, happening a lot with high performance cars now (TVRs, etc) as it's so much cheaper with the exchange rate.

Sounds like a scam to me although I am an extremely suspicious person.
Like some one else has allready pointed out you'd have thought his first email would have been information gathering about the car rather than organising payment.

what scammer wants to speak to you on the phone ?

get his number (if its in france your halfway there) and get freefaller to ring him and speak to him in french and ask about his intentions and stuff.

Sounds genuine to me, but proceed with caution.

It'll be genuine, but as with any UK sale, proceed with caution. Once a transfer has been in your account for a day it can't be retrieved. It's not like a cheque.

If it was me I'd probably play it cautiously and say it's cash and we meet at my bank to have it checked and pay it in or nothing.

How many people would buy a £16000 car unseen and transfer the money into a foreign account of someone he does not know.

sold my CSL to a guy in belgium who was upfront a similar away about details. once he had seen various pictures and asked me about it he effectively did it on trust, he paid me £1k up front as i was delivering the car to him and then the rest in cash in belgium.

happening a lot with these kind of cars, half the enquiries i got on my CSL were from europe.

I know my dad bought a motorbike while he was in Iraq from a guy in Scotland. Payed for it up front after having a lot of pictures, photocopies of service history etc sent to him so it does happen though it wasnt for 16k was 8k, still a lot of money.

Quite a lot with the exchange rate now. It's far easier to spot a legit seller that it is to spot a legit buyer, so this is why we have a lot of Europeans doing this - they are saving thousands.
