So, here's the story, a couple of days ago my girlfriends hotmail account was suspended. Today she searches online for a number for Hotmail, she rings a freefone number, speaks to some guy. He gets her to go onto logmein123 which brought up a window which asked for an activation code which he gave her. This guy is now using her laptop, and loads of the networks lists and shows that somebody has hacked into our laptop, apparently Nigerian hackers...? He suggested taking the laptop somewhere to get fixed to remove the virus. Now I'm a bit sceptical, would Microsoft remotely access out laptop? Has this guy now put something on the laptop to record all our details? I have now cancelled all my credit/debit cards and will have to change all my online passwords now too.

No Microsoft will not remotely access your laptop. Jesus. Dban the drive and learn to only visit legitimate sites when looking for numbers and if someone ever asks for access to your machine, deny it.

Sorry, which bits didn't make sense? It's been a bit of a stressful day with other things going on so apologies if I've made any errors!

The laptop is going off to PC shop who I know quite well and they are having to uninstall everything etc.

If this guy on the phone was a scammer, surely he should have said everything was fine with the laptop? Now we have put stops on our accounts so they can't do anything?

But perhaps in telling you to take your laptop to a shop to get fixed, that's all the time they need to rape your accounts.

Of course, they didn;t expect you to cancel everything as soon as you put the phone down......

The scam normally works like this..

Someone phones you up and informs you that you have a virus on your system. They ask to you install logmein123 which allows them to control your PC. They then access some perfectly innocent part of the operating system and tell you that you've been hacked/got a virus. They then tell you they can get rid of it for a fee.

Your story varies slightly but that could be because it was your girlfriend speaking to them, rather than you, and discrepancies have crept in.

But wouldn't most people cancel their cards after hearing that their PC had a virus? Saying that, most people wouldn't give someone on the end of the phone remote access to their PC.....

Instead of them ringing you, you rang them.
You were an unwrapped present.

True, I have never heard of anybody ringing up the Nigerian scammers before. A new twist on the scam.

Out of interest, which website gave you the hotmail technical number?

Ok Firstly you're all missing 1 main thing...

"Today she searches online for a number for Hotmail, she rings a freefone number,"

She made the call to the person..What number did she call and what website was it from???

Well logmein is a genuine service used to remotely connect to PC's that you aren't at but I've never heard of logmein123...
Sounds very dodgy, I'd just back up all your files, photo's, music etc and do a clean install of Windows.

Also there are no free phone numbers to Microsoft support.

I'm not sure of which website, I tried searching for what she searched for but I can't find the number. I've rung the number and it's hold music straight away.

when your hotmail account is suspended, all you have to do or they ask you to do is register a mobile phone number

they text you a code then you enter it to get access to your account back, they never remote access your pc for a suspended hotmail/msn account

logmein123.com is the easy to remember url you use to access the remote client.

it makes it easier getting on to client computers instead of giving them a large url.

01) Who did you call?
02) What number?

EDIT: I see above. Get it formatted and change all passwords.
