Scariest movie you've seen

Martyrs.

Suppose it was more horrific in the sense than it scared me though...

Very disturbing film. Not 'scary', but disturbing.

As previously mentioned; Drag Me to Hell is a good one, but again I personally didn't find it 'scary' in the sense that it had me thinking about it afterwards, it was purely a 'BOO' film, quite funny in places too!

Now Paranormal Activity - people seem to love it or hate it, I loved it, I was very creeped out going to bed the first few nights afterwards, my imagination seems to run wild and it doesn't help that my room/house layout is quite similar to that in the video! I liked that it doesn't rely on special effects or scary monsters (that you see), the simple thought of someone being next to your bed, breathing on you, is creepy enough for me, or there being someone watching you for hours as you sleep, I find this disturbing.

When I was younger the Halloween films, Scream and especially the Exorcist freaked me out.

'Threads' is also a good but strange suggestion (as it's BBC made, rather low budget I think, and from the 80s) but if you're at all unsettled by the thought of nuclear war then it will **** you up. We watched this in history at high school and I found it quite disturbing, I watched it again a couple of years ago and it was probably more unsettling with my more mature and knowledgable outlook on the world and amount of nuclear weapony we have.

Indeed. I saw it about a month ago and though I didn't find it that scary, I had some uneasy nights trying to sleep afterwards.

original version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for me, that movie goes beyond scary into the realm of disturbing and uncomfortable, for me it's not entertaining, just dam disturbing!

I found The Unborn and also Drag Me To Hell, pretty scary.

I must be missing something here but when I watched Drag me To Hell it was debatable if it was supposed to be scary or a comedy. I mean come on a gypsy woman trying to gum someone to death is scary ???

probably the most recent scary movie I've watched was the Blair witch project, at the time I thought it was a real documentary showing video footage of a camera they found from some people who disappeared.

What was that old Steven King one where the children get evil? Saw that as a kid and could never remember what it's called, want to look it up

Take your pick; every second book he pumps out has an "evil child" premise. And he wasn't the first. The Yanks have absolutely done this stereotype to death; it's so clichéd that it's not even scary anymore (if it ever was).

The Ring is the one movie that's probably scared me more than any other. I remember watching it on my own in an otherwise empty house nearly 10 years ago.

By it had reached the halfway mark, I was trying to dig my way through the couch with my spine in an effort to get away from the TV. It was that good. And for weeks I had mental visions of the dead girl groping at my window whenever I turned off the light before bed.

The American remake of The Ring gets slated but I found it pretty scary. We had to walk out of the cinema on that one because my friend's girlfriend wanted to go home. :o I was glad tbh. :o

REC is another good one. Perfect pace and stunning twists. My wife and I were squeezing each other's arms and trying to look away whilst at the same time trying not to miss anything that was happening on screen. If you know what I mean. :p

There's no film thats truly scared me but one thing in films that is quite chilling is when they use young English girls who then, very matter of factly in a neutral voice, describe what is going to happen to you, or what has happened.

Like in one of the Resident Evil films.

Evil kids don't scare me as I have long arms.

Salems Lot, scared the **** outa me when i was younger

I also agree with this. I think I was six when I saw it on the tele. Having a six year old in their bed all night scared ****less hopefully taught my Aunt and Uncle that horrors are not meant for over imaginative children.

I know, can't put my finger on why it scared me, maybe as I'm dealing with people like that on a day to day basis (albeit, not always gypsies and not always as mental).... But it takes allsorts!

Maybe it was just purely due to the constant jumps, but I found myself for the next few weeks looking over my shoulder for Gypsies haha :D

Creepshow 2 scared the life out of me and gave me nightmares when I was a young'n

especially the raft story with the blob on the lake!

Drag me to Hell :( wtf, that is slapstick comedy featuring a talking goat and loud 'scare' sounds... :/

I love horror flicks but have to say the scariest films (that I can recall atm) would be J.C's The Thing, and probably Event Horizon. The former is an assault on your senses instead of being visually scary, whilst the latter is warped - especially when you slow down those video scenes in the film.
