Scary Games

I personally found F.E.A.R pretty terrifying when played in a dark room and headphones on, so much so I couldn't play it as it freaked me out too much. Maybe I'm just a sissy though.

Ever played Half Life 1? First time i played that it sort of **** me up at certain parts.

The only thing scary about system shock 2, is how quickly it has aged. And quite how poor it is in comparison to anything today.

Stalker and deadspace are both good shouts. Ofc if you want a game which is actually scary check out silent hill 2 director's cut edition.

Really? I did the same and found most of the time I missed the "scary" because I was looking the wrong way or was completely ready for it because of the washed out colours and dodgy flash light, also the fact it was the same thing over and over and over again so it really got boring.

I enjoyed the game as an FPS, even though it was nothing special, the "horror" sections however I found utterly pointless.

Bioshock isn't scary, but the first part when the room when completely dark and you turned around and one of those splicers (think that's right) was right there infront of you. I should have expected it, but i didn't.

Also just remembered about The Lost Crown: Ghost Hunting Adventure. May not be to everyone's tastes since it's a puzzle point and click game but it still has quite a tense atmosphere.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

^^^ this. Very scary - Good realisiation of Lovecraftian art and story. Only bad thing is graphics are a little dated but its a gem... Heck i completed it so it has to be good.

It messes with your mind as well.... :D

I'd put in Bioshock - it's an amazingly atmospheric game and while it doesn't have bits that jump out at you, it certainly can unsettle and unnerve you.

Penumbra: Overture - the only real horror game out of the series,
Dead Space - Gory and too shooter-y to be truly scary, but loads of jump moments
STALKER - walking across the zone at night has brought grown men to their knees (myself included)
Original AVP - Laughable graphics now, but still scary when you know its there, but not quite sure where...

The Suffering (sort of) - The game featured monster designs by Stan Winston, the same guy who did the effects on Terminator and Aliens.

Too many people suggesting Doom 3.

Doom 3 = walk down corridor, get freaked out, enter room, something jumps out of dark, kill it, repeat, walk down corridor, get scared...after an hour it's not scary anymore and massively predictable.

What was that game where you were a serial killer and went about killing people by placing plastic bags on their heads, beating them to death with a hammer and suchlike?
