I've just been reading through the thread and a lot of people mention FEAR and Doom 3 often. Personally I thought both started off really good for scares and had a lot of atmosphere but about an hour in both just turned into very predictable FPS games. (doom 3 more so then FEAR as when you got past the intro to the spiders it then stopped being scary lol)
Fear could have done so much more to scare people towards the middle of the game but it just stopped and turned into a pure action game for a few too many levels. If you could get yourself through the utter boredom those levels provided, you got a few invisible creatures in an office which was good for scares then another 3/4 action levels before the end.
Exactly the same reasoning is why AVP 1 is scarier then AVP 2 as the marine campaign on avp2 lost its shine as soon as you get access to the smartgun which makes the rest of the campaign abit of a joke
Dead space is the only game where I've played so far which keeps the tension and atmosphere at a really high level, mostly due to very good use of sound and very tough enemies mixed with limited ammo.
Anyways rant over!
