Scots Please Help Me!

Anyone can wear a Kilt...

One thing I've always wanted to know, is my mother's side have their own kilt... could I wear that legitimately?

Just buy/hire whatever tartan you like the look of - clan allegiances don't really matter. My (Robertson) tartan isn't particularly my cup of tea so I bought a generic "Ancient Pride of Scotland" tartan that I really like. Also got a Sherriffmuir jacket which I like better than the generic Prince Charlie.

Just make sure you wear it properly i.e. commando. :D

Hard to tell what they look like as above but mine is primarily blue looking and looks alright with black or white socks/shirt.

Yer Doooooooooomed, Dooooooomed i tell ye :D

Im gettin married in 4 weeks and just been for a kilt fittin :) never worn one in my life b4, going for the Scottish National Tartan

Right me and the Mrs(She's Scottish) have finally set a proper date for our wedding, the problem that I'm facing is she wants me to wear a kilt!

What I'm stuck on is what tartan to wear or go for a plain kilt. I'm English and have no ties to any Scottish family or clan..... her family has a tartan, but i'm not sure if it would be ok to wear this.

Can anyone help?

Say no to the kilt chap. If you bow to this you are setting a precedent for a lifetime of being her skirt wearing biatch :(

Its your special day too. You don't want to feel uncomfortable standing there in a skirt.

You'd be surprised how comfortable they are, I know plenty of english people who have worn them and loved it. Who's have thought wearing a "skirt" could make you feel so manly...I guess the 3-4 inch blade in your sock helps

I've always wondered about wearing one for my wedding (if I ever get married), but, i'm probably too far removed now to be properly legitimate, plus my clan tartan isn't particularly my type. I may do for a wind up though if the "fiancee" makes it a big do. :p

Huh? Victorian? :D

Take the pre/early Victorian era, chuck in some of Sir Walter Scott's highland pulp fiction and hey presto you get clan tartans and the modern day kilt; the latter being a far cry from what was worn in the past.

There's Scots' history and then there's esrsatz Scots' history. Unfortunately it's the latter variety that perpetuates.

So after some excellent reply's from a few of you, like the skirt wearing biatch one, (The mrs did spot this one) I have decided to bow down and wear a kilt. Going to go for a nice simple plain black.
