Scrappage Scam Extended

Besides the loss of some rather nice cars to the scheme, my main worry is the encouragement of buying new cars when consumer debt is so high at the moment.

People keep asking me when im going to scrap my car. Its not going to happen though despite the fact i have a few quid saved and could afford to get a new car on scrappage. The fact is my old volvos are super cheap to run (estate especially), reliable, comfy and despite the high mileage, run fine!

Worse things have happened, and maybe there will be some long term benefits in doing so.

Apologies for not getting my knickers in a twist over old Fiestas and Polos.

So why get your knickers in a twist worrying about people who think that it is a waste of resources?

What about the Mercedes, the Rover 600 and 800's? What about the people who can't buy cheap old cars?

Why make rubbish, incorrect arguments about emissions going down - when the emissions are dwarfed by those of the manufacturing process.

Why make rubbish arguments about getting unsafe cars off the road - when that is not the stated aim of the scheme and the requirement for a valid MOT means that safety isn't an issue.

A mate of mine was laughing at me for spending nearly £500 on my 1996 328i at the weekend, he thought I was daft as I "could have got £2k for it!"

He fails to appreciate that,

A, I don't want a new car.
B, I can't afford a new car.
C, A £500 hit in 7months of ownership is hardly that bad.
D, Said new car with scrappage allowance would lose £500 of its value as soon as I drove it out of the showroom....

So I carry on driving my old car, killing the planet.

logic tells me that by keeping it on the road saves the materials required to build its replacement not to mention keeps money in my pocket, perhaps I'm just missing the point?

When does a new car, become an old car?

After 3 years and 364 days?

Does it spontaneously combust after reaching 100k on the clocks?

When its no longer serviced by the main dealer?

**** knows, there's no definition. Why are you asking me?

It is quite amusing how he has gone from driving an N reg Polo to being a new car 'snob' in less than 6 months.

I never drove that, it was my wife's car. In any case, I was always a car snob, I just hadn't done anything about it. Hence me adding 'if they could help it' to my comment about the red Golf Mk III.

I'm quite happy with the scrappage scheme.
Quite a few 96 to 99 E39 5-series have appeared in my local breakers because of it. Shame really as they are pretty tidy but hey, I'm not complaining if I can rip bits off them to keep my "old banger" of a 97 E39 going.

You said that a 4 year old car would end up breaking down and require a tow to a Greek garage to save you and would be a horrible heap of crap, yet if it had a 59 on the front all would be well.

I didn't say it would, I said that it's more likely to. The older a car is, the more likely it is to break down, no matter how shiny the paintwork on the yuppie-mobile (which broke down recently iirc). But hey it looks nice and it's got a BMW badge so that's ok.

I thought they had to be crushed and no parts sold?

Funny how the most unreliable car we've had in recent years was a brand new VW Golf my missus (stupidly) bought. The worst thing was that the gearbox failed after just 35,000 miles and out of warranty, I've mentioned it here a few times. A very common problem that VW failed to recognise apart from improving the part on later models.

Since then we've bought second hand cars and they have been far more reliable and we were able to buy much nicer cars than a Golf.

You seem very defensive almost to an extreme about the scrappage subject which is very telling indeed. You also seem to have a strange obsession with BMWs as well and I like the irony of 'it looks nice' when you posted a picture of your car here to try and prove that yours did. :D

If I was offered a four year old yuppie moile, I'd be slightly concerned that me and the other occupants would find ourselves being towed to a Greek garage for a replacement.

Sounds to me like you are massaging the truth in an attempt to make people think you didn't really suggest that there are good odds of being stranded with a breakdown. MP's are not allowed to call or accuse each other of the name I am thinking.

This as I said around page 3, is the one positive of the scheme, lots of parts for people who can't afford a new car!

So your straw poll of one backs up your implication that Golfs are unreliable. Not a stats man, are you Wicksta.

I am not being defensive, I am being discursive. Glad you liked the picture.

There is a whole website dedicated to the problem the missus' Golf suffered. I'm sure you'll find similar ones relating to other problems with Golfs, or indeed any car you might buy brand new.

You are being very defensive, you've been calling people childish names in the thread even!

Yeah I though the picture was great, we're lucky to see such exotica on here. :D

PS. Thanks for the info Dr Who :)
