Scuba Diving thread?

I completed my OWD in the Maldives. I started my training in Sharm el sheik but the wife had booked the cairo flight half way through so couldnt dive.

I found It hard work. rewarding but hard work.
Out of shape hadn't really swam in 20 yrs. But used to be a very strong swimmer. Mind believes I can do it body says "Lol you aint no teenager anymore"

I had improved my fitness from sharm to the Maldives and the experience was completely different, Much more relaxed. Loved it.

Bit of a scary moment at the end of that dive when some muppet in a speed boat came right over us. You dont get much warning just a zoooom of the prop

Looks good Mattyg, diving in the Maldives is reputed to be amazing.

To the UK divers as I didn't think it warranted a new thread...

I'm interested in getting into wreck diving around the UK, and can do so with my local club. Any tips, advice?

I wouldn't exactly call the 2-3 hours 'Pool' bits as particularly exciting, there's also the theory bits as well which can take a while (assuming you do that on holiday and not before).

Not the end of the world, but just had a look at costs and it kinda depends where you go, for me going to Madeira it was slightly cheaper doing it the referral method, however doing it with Emperor Divers in Sharm is a chunk cheaper to just do the 'fast track' course it seems.

I went snorkelling for the first time ever while on holiday in Crete this year and from the first 10mins I was hooked! I've got another holiday in a couple of weeks (Oludeniz, Turkey) where i'll be snorkelling again :) But i'm seriously thinking about scuba diving next year.

Where would be the cheapest with the best experience place to learn to scuba? I would have to incorporate this in to a holiday for me and the wife so unfortunately I couldn't donate the whole of our holiday to scuba!

Well he did say incorporated into a holiday.

I guess Egypt is pretty cheap, not sure I'd want to dive there at the moment though..

My first thought was Egypt but with the recent troubles and shark attacks I'm slightly put off! Would love to go to Thailand but expect this to be well outside our budget :(

fair point, it is more expensive to get to thailand, more the sort of thing you would do if you were going there anyway....

Apparently Sharks rarely attack divers. And when they do its because they closed their mouths and your hand was in it.

But as a noobie I wouldn't be confident. When I was diving in the Maldives I did think wouldn't it be cool if a shark turned up. But hey when your down theres not much you can do about it. But I don't think I'll go looking

It's fine, been to Egypt twice this year, the first was during the protests before Murbarak left, didnt even know anything was happening, and not noticed any real changes on returning a few weeks ago.

The Red Sea resorts are seperated from the rest of Egypt by distance among other things.

It annoys me a little with the attitude of the general travelling public that a little trouble in one region of the country and people choose to go elsewhere, when at this time, Egypt really needs tourism to remain stable, as it is a massive income to the country.

thailand is a great place to learn, koh tao is an island totally dedicated to learning diving

Which has its benefits and drawbacks. I did my AOW there, and yeah it was dirt cheap but the diving was awful. Most of the coral was killed a few years back by higher temperatures burning it, and there are more divers than fish around Koh Tao.

i agree, its not the best diving.

When I was snorkelling off the rocky coast of Rethymon in Crete I got in to real deep water as in looking down was like looking in to the abyss. It was a fantastic experience but I do remember thinking if a shark was to turn up I wouldn't stand a chance! (I know is is extremely unlikely but still)

Egypt would be ideal and to be honest it's not the troubles that put me off, it's the sharks! I feel I would be constantly looking out for them.

I'm going to get a new mask for snorkelling in turkey in a couple of weeks as the last one pinched the bit just under my nose quite a bit, also might book a diving excursion while we're there :)

So how would I go about getting into Scuba diving like this? I am a poor student, so it would need to be as cheap as possible lol.
