Seagate HDD Initialization Problem

Yeah it's strange, I bought the drive as an individual item, not part of a system.

I'm guessing the retailer I bought it from had it supplied to them with the intention of it being used within a pre-built system?

Sounds like it, Maybe go back to the company you got the drive from and ask why the old you a OEM HDD when it was not part of a system you bought.

It is out of warranty by 4 Months? When did you buy it?

I would certainly contact Seagate Support on this.

He already did, they told him it was a OEM HDD supplied to a company to be used in a system so pointed him back to the suppliers of the HDD

this is what they said

I tried Seagate, this is what i got...

Component
The product you identified was sold as a system component. Please contact your place of purchase for service. Seagate sells many drives to direct OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers. These products are usually configured for the OEMs only, as components for their systems. You must contact your place of purchase for any warranty support on these drives.

Look like I'm **** outta luck on this one :(

<Quoted older post>

That looks to be an automatic response from entering a product ID into a website, which is why I made my suggestion about contacting Support, especially as there has not yet been another reply from the Seagate rep in this thread since the post, which you have quoted. It states he tried Seagate, not Support so if he hasn't actually spoken to support he should, if he has, yes, he is out of luck.

Either way, I cannot understand if it was bought in May, how the warranty can by out by 4 months with the company he bought it from, even if it is OEM?

Maybe it was an open box clearance item (or unboxed clearance item, if it's OEM), with a reduced warranty ? But even so, they must have been a sucky company to buy from.

Name and shame, who did you buy the drive from?
I bought it from Amazon originally... Learnt my lesson the hard way I suppose :(

Anyways, I bought a replacement drive from OcUK, it took a week to arrive (but I do live in Cyprus so a week is pretty damn good!) I installed it the other night and it formatted first time without any issues. Finally after a year of buying components I now have a fully functioning PC :D

Just a shame I've had to pack it all away again prior to moving back to the UK early next year.
