Without looking to derail this thread - Re the Mazda6 2.0 Diesel engine I suggested earlier, on what are you basing your above comment on?

The early Mazda 6 diesel engines and associated parts have the same problems as the TDCi but with even higher failure rates and at greater cost. Have a look at the HJ and Mazda forums. Shocking stories on there with costs running into their thousands.

I'd prefer an S60 D5, but as cheap diesel commuters go the S40 seems reasonably competent and they do have comfy seats. They aren't a brilliant driver's car but since that isn't a factor it could be worth a punt. Admittedly that particular one is sat on 17"s but the majority have 15"s so shouldn't be too pricey to replace the rubber.
