So who here still dislikes Vettel?

Yes the finger wagging is a bit annoying, but that aside, all I am reading about him is nothing but praise, respect and a likability factor that would put many F1 drivers to shame.

I think we may be witnessing the rise of one of the all time greatest Formula 1 drivers.

His qualifying speed and race pace is immense. For me, out of all the drivers on the grid he lives furthest on the edge of compromise between danger and sanity.

I'm a Jenson Button fan at heart, and was annoyed when he drove basically straight into him at Spa, but there's no denying that he is a talent.

He also seems like a genuinely nice guy, whenever I watch interviews of him it is impossible not to warm to his friendly, approachable and generally nice nature.

I think he epitomises the perfect role model for kids wanting to get into Formulas and F1 inparticularly.

The only thing I think he needs to improve on is his overtaking, but I was there at Silverstone to see what a job he did from starting so far down the grid... those moves in effect, won him the World Driver's Championship don't forget!

Less of the finger wagging though, Sebastian :D

I'm in two minds about him, he seems a decent enough guy and not quite as sterilised as some drivers, but after crashing into Webber at Istanbul my opinion of him dropped. He is a good consistent fast driver, I just think that the car was flattering him. Put Hamilton, Alonso, Raikkonen, one of the really quick guys into the RB and I think they would comfortably outpace Vettel.

I didn't think I would like him winning the championship, but the way he came across after winning it made me like him a lot more.

at the end of the day, he did the business when it mattered.

10 poles is nothing to be sniffed at and he has been very unlucky with reliability.

We can only reliably compare him to Webber though.

However the number of times drivers have fallen apart at the last hurdle is amazing. Both Webber and Fred seemed out of it.

I like Vettel in general. The only things that have soured him to me was the internal politics of Red Bull, and his reaction when he hit Webber.

I don't think he's going to be one of F1's true greats. He has great pace, that's for sure, but I don't think he's got the same quality as Alonso or Hamilton even - yet alone the true greats of yesteryear. If you look at his performances in lower formulas he doesn't have the winning pedigree of other top drivers.

This year he's shown great pace, but little race craft.

I've liked him since his superb win in Italy '08. He's probably my favourite driver, although I prefer supporting German drivers in general. His qualifying pace is quite ridiculous, in fact it's scary! 10 poles out of 19 is an incredible strike rate. His racecraft does need a bit of working on but towards the end of the season he was faultless. :)

He annoyed me through-out this year, however I absolutely cannot begrudge him the title. He was, as Anthony Davidson said on the Five Live coverage, the fastest driver this year. That won him the title so fair play.

What he needs to do now is mature as champion through next year. Improve his skills, especially at racing with other cars as opposed to sprinting from the front, and I see no reason not to like him. He certainly seemed to be a genuine guy after clinching the title.

The whole finger waving thing was just an excuse for the majority of this board to hate him because he was winning. It's amazing how fickle some here can be. He was hailed as the next god after winning in the Toro Rosso, yet this year as an arrogant little runt. Amazing some people still believe you can be a top level sportsman and NOT be arrogant.

Sums it up for me.

He won't always have the quickest car on the grid each season, so will need to learn to overtake at some point.

Im back to two minds about him. His Torro Rosso win was brilliant, I nearly cried that Bordais had a problem on a grid as it really would have been a turn around for a 1-2 type of result, so id say something has been down to the cars Vettel has been given.

Yeah he is very good (his championship does show that he is better than Webber in the same car) but he's not that likeable, like most young f1, he has more of a petulant child attitude (presented through the media and tv if nothing else). The finger pointing is just silly, just no emotion or charisma in his celebration's....

To be honest you cant help not liking him just in the way he talks, he's no Rubens or Mark who seem to really have personality out side of racing (most drivers do and tend to be a bit private about it but it does reflect in their attitudes to talking to the media too)

Hamilton is better.

You are of course the largest hamilton fan on this forum, so you might be inclined to say that?

I dislike the finger wagging but I have to agree with the OP, he's genuinely a likeable guy when you see him in interviews. He has the drive and desire to do well without the slightly shady nature Alonso brings :D

Pretty much sums it up.

Not sure if he will be as big as RBR and others have made out.. Only seems to do well when leading, if he was in mclaren or Ferrari this season, i doubt he would have done as well as lewis or alonso. But he's young and like Lewis has a lot of maturing to do, so only time will tell.

Saying that, Hamilton was a moany little bugger this year. 'I have no grip...I have zero grip guys' - 'I have NO downforce' - 'These tyres have no grip' etc etc etc. Fine, if you have a problem, tell your team, but at the end of the day you just have to get on with it.

The only reason you didn't hear Vettel moaning about it was because his car did have grip. Both Button and Hamilton were complaining of low grip, maybe because the car had low grip, funnily enough. They were getting on with it, it's not like they parked their car and went in a huff.

I must admit I started to hate him mid-season when Red Bull were clearly favouring him and he blamed Webber for what happened in Turkey, when interviewed he comes across as a decent enough bloke though and nobody can argue he wasn't the deserved champion this year.

I just hope we don't have another 5yrs of Vettel/Red Bull domination, the scary thing this year is Vettel lost loads of points and still came out on top, I don't think I can bear F1 becoming a one man show again.

I realise he did actually have poor grip, but he just seemed really wingey this season...meh.

On topic, I was thinking the same thing mmj, it's been really interesting for the last couple of years as lots of different drivers and teams have been winning races...lets hope the rest catch up for next year.
