second x2 review

Big woop.

CPU's have had it worst. We had the AMD 64 for 3-4 years straight at top, with minimal performance increases and we managed to survive.

We are just going through a slow patch, nothing much it will speed up just be patient.

I hope it does speed up, its all AMD's fault that we are not getting cards now that are destroying those old cards, if they were competing, i bet even Nvidia would have released cards that handed their Ultra its arse long before now.

The 8 series are single GPU's that were released in November 2006, it is now nearly the end of Jan 2008, we should have cards blowing those away now, but we don't, we dont even have 2x GPU cards getting released now in 2008 that are blowing those old 2006 single GPU cards away, thats laughable no matter how you look at it.

Why? It's not really like the games have demanded it either.

Games shouldn't have anything to do with it, its called progression, gfx cards aint progressed for over a year, thats crap, even Nvidia are releasing old tech still, they still have old tech cards to come out ffs, thats utter crap, Feb 14th 2008, Nvidia are going to release another 2006 8 series, thats absolute cack imo, gfx cards have died a death thanks to AMD, fact is its 2008, we should not still be awaiting 2006 tech cards to come out.

This thread is both funny and eye-opening in one go. Some people (and some of those names I would normally be interested in their opinions etc) are talking such utter biased twaddle as to be almost unbelievable. Please folks, deliberately trying to hate on an ATi launch where it obviously looks a promising card (subject to a few better and more reviews) is kinda beneath you don't you think?

I understand what some are saying, its 2 (old essentially shrunken 2900xt) chips on one card (with some xfire magic built in)...it should demolish the Ultra... Well judging by what we see so far (well at least the numbers I am looking at) it does beat the Ultra in many games and some by a good margin, whilst in a few its a bit slower. Why does it upset you so much that ATis method of getting the crown is 2xgpus ? ?

As someone else said...its all about price vs performance vs energy efficiency vs noise...if ATi come out on top (with their 2 cards) then fine....if its nVidia then fine....I don' see the need to rain on anyones parade....a good card is a good card is a good card who makes it or how they make it matters not!

.....right I feel a lot better now ive got that out my system...sorry for the grump guys! Normal constructive posting will shortly resume.

Im not upset that they are using 2x GPU's to get the crown from a single one, its the way that its done, fact is its 2x GPU's, it should be absoluetly thrashing a single GPU into oblivion to get the crown, especially an old 2006 GPU, not just beating it to get the crown,

If AMD have to resort to fighting Nvidia's single cards with 2x then so be it, as long as it gets them competing, as thats what we need, they can not do it on a single GPU basis, and they can barely do it with 2x :p, but they have done it nevertheless, so we now have them competing, that is good for us. :)

Hopefully these new drivers its delayed for are better than the ones that have been used in reviews, and they improve even more over the coming months, one thing we can be sure of, if it can be improved by quite a bit through drivers, then we know it won't take long, as thats what ATi are good at, drivers, they release a new set every month, you can not say that about Nvidia, Nvidia can not compete in the driver dept. :)

From what is meant to be coming in future it will be classed as a single card as multi gpu's look to be the way forward. So even though this card has 2 gpu's its what we will soon class as 1 card.

for christ sake guys what do you want ? the card beats infact thrashes the ultra in a lot of game not just 20% well over 50% in some games so whats the problem ? i dont care if its 6 gpus if its cheap and performs then so be it !
how can some of you say the 3870 is an old asre core? god its fairly new i really dont know what you guys want from a card its under 300 craps on the opp. in most games and the ones it doesnt you can bet your ass its drivers get a grip folks!

does anybody know what time they are up for sale,i hope its not something silly like 1400 cause im in work till 1645 and would not be able to order ,or would they still send one out next day that late
yer nda but what time gibbo has been quite on this launch, its the 23rd in 35 mins

I would hardly say its thrashed anything, we are talking a few frames here a few frames there.. It's not like its' 30-40+ fps faster in everything, and then you have crysis.. I mean why is the framerate so bad for this game?? I know its highly detailed etc.. but it takes the cake and eats it.

Plus we've got the 9800 GX2 coming out soon, even though SLI isn't as effecient as Crossfire.. I'm 100% confident it will take the performance lead again. Although I believe with driver improvements for the 3870 X2... 2 x 9800 GX2/3870 will be probably be very similar performers when you factor in crossfire effeciency.

a few frames here and there? are you looking at the same results i am? and why crysis AGAIN ,look guys the game is screwed up , i dont care if any card runs crysis great or not for me the game is not worth bothering about

It wasn't just Crysis though, you've got Need For Speed Pro and Bioshock apparently not performing so great either.

The majority of benchmarks show 5-10fps advantage tops. There is the odd game that shows 20fps advantage in a lower resolution. Serious Sam 2 was the only game that showed some ass whooping. Maybe if they sort out the problems with the games I want to play Bioshock/Crysis I'd consider the card.. But for me it just doesn't feel revolutionary or kick ass.. Maybe I'm just picky ;).
