Self checkouts

"Are you OK packing?"

"Yes thank you"

The next thing that happens is some kind of race between them and me to pack my items before they crush it all in the tiny space at the end and destroy any fragile items.

It's almost as if I have challenged them to a dual.

:D

Self checkouts are great but there is always a cretin on them holding everyone, the usual one being someone who just cant comprehend that once you've scanned you put the item on the baggiing bit despite the bloody animation on screen!

I once raged at a dumb tart student in tesco express for trying to scan a single apple whivh obviously has no barcode or label whilst on the phone to her mate paying zero attention. Ended up shouting at her to get off her f-ing phone, pay attention and choose it through the fruit and veg menu

I feel left out here.. Other than the usual "unexpected item in the bagging area" i find them brilliant.

Also the staff at my Local supermarkets are brilliant, except the aldi, which is like taking a trip on the African Queen with authentic German Sausages.

My local sainburys checkout person asked for ID from me while buying paracetamol (gotta be 16)... i'm 25 and not even been ID'd for booze for years (an early receeding hairline will work wonders for that)... fail. There was an arkward silence and i gave my best WTF face as I really wasn't expecting it. I'm really not aware of any 'challenge 30' paracetamol ads at the present time, so she didn't have much of an excuse.

It is think 25. You are 25. Therefore the operator did their job?

People ask for their ID now so they do not lose their jobs. - So they would rather be safe than sorry, and if someone asks for your ID it is a compliment is it not? :)

I found it very odd to come over here to find you have to pack your own bags, that's the checkout chicks job and you expect them to do it! They are good at it too, separating the meat from the vege, cleaning products from food items, etc and generally packing the bags well (not too heavy, not too light). So much faster than if I do it myself, fumbling around trying to open bags, trying to get stuff to sit right at the bottom..

As for self checkouts, they are fine.. I just go with whatever has the shortest line, be that self checkouts or normal. Often the shortest line ends up the longest once I step in the queue, there seems to always be someone who wants a pricecheck, or stuffs up the self checkout machines!

lol @ agruments over types of tills available.

We have the two types in Belgium. The ones for small purchases 10 items or less and the large ones where you go through with your trolley and just pay and there are random spot checks.

Neither of which require you to put your purchases on a special "bagging area". :D

I don't mind using either self-checkout or going to see a real person. The only thing that frustrates me slightly is seeing someone who clearly has more than 15 items in the express checkout line where there's a sign that states 'maximum 15 items'. I think the tills in those lines should be configured to cut off after 15 items. That'd learn 'em.

Has anyone tried the self-service machines in WHSmith?

It's the first time I've ever seen a public touchscreen without any input delay, and you can override the voice prompts because the buttons aren't greyed out while it's talking: "PLEA-"*beep*

Just need to get them installed in Sainsburys now. It's like the difference between broadband and dial-up.

He didn't even bag the stuff up so I had to reach around (:eek:) the other side, then bag it myself.

You do realise packing your own stuff has been a thing for quite a while now, unless you specifically ask for help. It's not such a hard task anyway.

The amount of times i have had unexpected item baggage area really doesn't please me. Then that half arsed bloke comes along and types his id code. Im not sure if im just bad at it, or the machines hate me. It always seems to have a strop for me.

Unexpected item in the bagging area. Bain of my shopping life.

Self scan with a zapper as you go round is much better; bag up in the trolley as you go and then just hand over the zapper and pay.

Of course, you'll be guaranteed a re-scan if you are in a hurry.

The Sainsbury's ones used to be quicker, but then they updated them and for whatever reason, that slowed them down.

If they've been installed for a few years they're probably overheating as well, the terminals in the store where I used to work were all really loud and the vents along the sides were clogged with dust. Same goes for most of the tills and PCs there actually.

One of the uni housemates used to weigh everything through as potatoes.

Lamb = potatoes
Prawns = potatoes
pizza = potatoes

Made for a very cheap shopping bill I'm surprised he didn't get caught :D

I think it's called "up stealing".

As I understand it the check outs security is based on weight but it doesn't know the difference between a a cheap cut of 10lb steak and an expensive cut of 10lb steak so what's stopping people just swapping bar-codes?

Nothing really, people used to do it relatively often, even with stuff like Blu-ray players etc.
