Self checkouts

Self checkout machines are kinda pointless because it still needs a human to manage the annoying twitchy "unexpected item in bagging area" messages and dealing with alcohol sales.

doesn't make them pointless - if I pop into M&S at lunch and there are 20 or so self checkout machines they only need a couple of staff to assist with any problems - more efficient than just using manned checkouts

This. One person operating 10 or so tills is still brilliant value for money.

I do wonder however about the bigger picture, with all these jobs being replaced by machines, how are people going to make a living in a few decades time?

After machines replace all the workers, humans will have no role to fill except as pleasure slaves for the machines. We will be herded into large red light districts, and have to fulfil the most debased wishes of our electronic masters. Like running magnets over their CPUs while they jack into the mains.

I've seen the future.

Diddums, it will result in the shorter working week. Part time is already becoming the norm. My current job is 30 hours, while still being paid around the same as my previous 37-hour job.

Morons that use the self service and have a tonne of security tagged booze/DVD/clothes and or a load of loose items that need to be weighed but they're so obscure you can't find them in the options.. Argh.

B&q and asda ones are a nightmare for detecting weights of items.. UNEXPECTED ITEM IN BAGGING AREA! It's the item I just bloomin scanned for pity's sake..

humans without skills perhaps, but that is their problem

Local tesco now has scan as you shop, as well as self-service. The scan as you shop makes things so much quicker and easier, bizarrely though it is always very empty

Ive worked on a till a lot and I would only pack for people when you can tell they will take long time (this is where you ask if they would like some help, most say yes) or if they asked me.
What comes to giving the bags I always had loads on at the end but there was always one customer using 10 bags for 10 items and taking all the rest of the bags with them too. It didnt annoy me at all it was just bit funny to see these people.

I also worked on the basket only checkouts and it is easy for you to pack for yourself there too.

What comes to self checkouts I hate them and yes they still need a person working there a whole time. Also find it very annoying that people go to use them who have trolleys. Its should be for people with not much shopping. I always choose normal till over self checkout.

My Tesco always tends to pick me as the 'random' person to check that I am being honest at the scan as you shop thingy.

I suspect a lot of jobs won't exist for humans in the next 10-20 years.

cars can already drive themselves so how long till taxi drivers aren't needed? truck drivers (a machine never needs rest or sleep so how can humans compete) ? etc
Someone invented a robot that can learn how to do stuff from watching a person or youtube videos.

That robot can cook etc and do any other simple human task.

I think there's a forklift robot so how long until warehouse don't need staff ?
There's probably robots for stacking shelves coming as well

Almost any low skilled job can easily be done by a machine#

more industries will change to robot than industries that are created to maintain them surely

You could have said the same thing 10-20 years ago and have been accurate. Different jobs appear.

what jobs disappeared in the last 10-20 years? or do you mean the ones that disappeared abroad.

most manufacturing is still done by humans even at car plants

Have recently started using Scan as you Shop, now that does speed the whole process up!

This is obviously for a trolley amount, then use Self Scan for a basket amount.

As for a till operators packing my shopping, I find it quicker to bag my own and can do a better job using less bags. It's not what I think their job should be, if a shop feels like offering this, then they should have a second person on the till purely to pack.

Reason why they only give a few bags out at a time at the checkout is like whats mentioned above, people will take them all. Especially old ladies who will literally pick up the spares and say she needs them for putting garden rubbish in for some excuse like that. Seen it before.

I like the Aldi/Lidl way the best. That is the future.

Last time I saw that scan as you shop was 1998 when Safeway existed.
