Self checkouts

one thing I noticed at asda half the offers listed on the shelves aren't actually active on the self service

the offers only seem to get applied after going to pay, so it shows one price you go to pay then the price drops.

Self-service because it's much faster, not only waiting vs a manned till but I can scan/pay & pack quick enough.

My only concern is the loss of jobs in checkouts, a reliable source of income for people without many skills or poor health/elder workers. I'm unsure what other jobs are out there in the market for them to do.

They are beyond "stupid"
You can not bag up as you scan on a self service checkout I used to and every time you will end up in a situation where the machine gets stuck calculating the weight of something no matter how careful you are.

so instead you have to scan everything and build a jenga tower on the scales because the space is so small.

then you have to pay for the crap, then you have to bag stuff up whilst the machine is constantly telling you to take your items or whatever.

all the time I'm almost constantly telling the machine to "shut the **** up" the assistant must think I'm crazy or something but it just annoys the hell out of me how the machines constantly have a go at you no one is fast enough you don't get the time to bag your stuff up just constant harassment being bombarded at you.

Let's pretend what the machine says comes from someone behind you in the queue, people realise how rude this would be right? but it's perfectly okay for a machine to rush you? like wtf man

It clearly wants you to gtfo, and is usually a female voice, so are you misogynist EH EH!!?!??!

I refuse to use them: They're doing people out of a job; I didn't ask for them; I don't get a discount for using them and they always crash resulting in me having to call a member of staff anyway.

In my experience the adjusted offer price is displayed on the machine on a 3for2 the 3rd item scans in as £0.0 etc.

I always check my receipt and the offers mostly don't actually work.

I'm sure they are aware but know most customers either won't notice or just CBA to rectify the situation with a member of staff.

Why can't someone invent microchips that go into the packaging of every item in the shop. You pick up what items you want, then just walk out of the shop. The sensor in the door detects the items you've taken, and then wirelessly debits your credit card or whatever.

It's the future!

My only problem with the self service checkouts is when the supermarket doesn't have the item in the system, which happens more often than I deem acceptable.

Other than that, there is the usual frequent annoyance of people that are incompetent or impatient. Both are equally as frustrating to witness but not the fault of the system itself.

Yeah...that wont be so awkward with knives and alcohol...totally not.

I don't mind them, any issue I've had with them have been my own fault. That being said one of my pet hate of people use them is this: When someone scans there food pays for it and THEN packs it. So it basically it takes twice as long as necessary and so wasting their own and my time in the process lol. I always open the bag first before scanning so I don't end up having the move the times twice.

Still not quite as bad as being trolley blockers. You know the types who stop there trolleys just beyond the entrance of an isle so three directions of traffic are blocked.

Or am I just being a miserably old git (29)

When the weight meter keeps bleeping at you to remove your filthy bag, you'd change your tune, its almost impossible to have a bag on the weighter without setting it off.

Packing as you go can cause the machines to have a bit of a meltdown sometimes and the staff actually advise you scan pay then pack to avoid it.

I think this is where people are going wrong. They have to get the bag ready before and pack things in as you go or the machine gets confused by the extra weight. I don't use bags often but the few times I have, it has worked just fine.

Waitress Self-Scan for the win. Unless you buy alcohol, razors or more than one packet of pain relief; at which point you have to interact with a human and get them to wave the Magic Fob at the machine.

Never have I ever, on the few occasions I've used a manned checkout, had my bags packed for me by the cashier.

We are not in America, pack your own damn bags. You'd probably only complain they did it wrong anyway :p

Generally find self-service OK, the only thing that annoys me sometimes is the lack of space for packing, and that the bags are always sticking together. Oh and those people who take trolleys through. There's an Asda in Manchester that now has self-service tills with a conveyor purely for people with trolleys. Quite a good idea i thought.

They use the same data as the actual tills but as said, often the discounts are applied at the end. It's not really a self-scan issue.

i think the "tesco - scan while you shop" thing is the closest we have for that

Safeway were doing this years ago when I was a kid and Sainsbury's have had it for a long time too. Actually quite surprised Tesco rolled it out.

RFID chips in packaging would be convenient but presents its own security/theft risks. Ultimately you'd still need some kind of checkout system in place to ensure everything scans, it would just speed the process up slightly.
