self-defence weapon or not?

You already have a weapon, your keyboard. Don't really think there are many burglaries around here that I have heard of, the penhill kids keep themselves to themselves.

Crossbow, just don't aim at the chest or head.

easily bought and easily used especially for the range you will be using it as "defense" just pull the bolt out and say he/she hurt them self on some glass.

:)

So someone has come to my house with the intent to steal my property etc, and I can not give them a good hiding, which I don't think is unfair. I think that is ridiculous, I see what your saying and I respect the law, but if I give a burgular what for, then the law is against me for defending my property, that is ludicrous. I don't condone attacking an intruder if they are genuinely trying to leave, but otherwise, I would condone 'unreasonable force'.

Property is replaceable, life isn't. Yes, I'm aware that some things are quire literally irreplaceable but the point being that we, as a society, don't (and shouldn't) value property above life.

If a burglar is threatening you or your family then by all means use reasonable force to defend yourself and them - the law will back you up but once they're no longer offering a threat to you then you don't get to continue with the defence because it simply becomes vengeance.

More realistic suggestion, are cattle prods legal? Good reach and would probably stun a human pretty badly. But as far as I know stun guns aren't legal so they probably aren't either.

I'm sure there's an easy joke in there about why you'd have a cattle prod in your bedroom but no, having a cattle prod is not a good idea and very difficult to explain away.

I think all this is a ruddy joke. If someone breaks into your home, where you live with your family who you love more than anything else in the world and that is full of things you have worked hard for.

Then more fool them. You should be allowed to use any force required to stop that intruder that is in your home uninvited.

Burglars etc are of course scum, but I am sure they know that what they are doing is illegal. So should be prepared for the consequences of there actions.

Like many people on here and people who I speak with in real life. We would and should be able to do anything to protect out property and loved ones if we believe we or them are in possible danger.

You can use reasonable force if you are in danger from or being threatened by someone but you can't take matters into your own hands - you'll be granted the benefit of the doubt to some extent because it is recognised you are in a high pressured situation but if it were allowed that you could do anything at all to someone in your house then that could create huge potential problems. While you might "just" beat up people who were intruders there would doubtless be others who would go much further because they could once someone was over the threshold - all you'd need was a vaguely plausible excuse to attack them.

Anyone remember Tony Martin?

It's illegal to do anything more than ask them to put it back and please go away is the result of that from what i've heard. Extreme case maybe but a very good example of what we can REALLY do....

Anything you do to protect your property is pre-meditated and therefore opens you up to prosection if it goes wrong for them and good for you....

Bad example really - he shot a kid in the back as he was trying to escape. He was also a paranoid loon with watch post around his property.

In the real world, there is a lot of leeway and reasonable force can be quite reasonable.

Every single room in my house has a weapon in it. Two decades of Japanese martial arts have left me with a penchant for staffs and such like. However, remember that whatever you choose you have you need both the skill and the will to use it, otherwise it just opens you to retaliation. I have a South African friend and he always says that owning a gun out there is a two-edged sword. Owning one theoretically gives you an edge but if you have be willing to use it, otherwssie the crminimals will take it from you and kill you with it. Food for thought.
I have both so woe betide the burglar who tries my house while I'm in it. The encounter won't be fatal (I'm not that dumb) but it sure will hurt.

Saying that my fist sensei said something that has always stuck in my mind because of it's shear stupidity and ability to provoke thought. "Ask anyone who's be stabbed to death, they never saw it coming. ALWAYS run from a knife if you can. It is NEVER worth it."

IMO If you're going to keep a weapon then at least don't make it obvious that that is what you're doing - if you have a baseball bat then at least use it a few times and keep it with a ball and catchers mitt or something. Don't just hang it by the door as some obvious club like weapon. Perhaps keep a hammer in your tool bag somewhere you can get to quickly etc...

I have one of these: Light enough to swing quick, but hard enough to smash knees

Nice - personally I don't plan on getting that close so I have something similar to this:

I think in France, they're allowed to have this type of gun that fires ball bearings. Perhaps something similar should be allowed over here?

Gun that fires ball bearings? You mean BB gun?:) My little brother has a bag of them, would be a good joke to fire it at a burglar:D

Huh, that reminds me about the Hunting Catapult I've got at home in my bedroom... that'd do a pretty good job (Fires ball bearings). You can't actually use them to hunt. However it's the best way to get the correct image back from Google xD

But serious,

There is only one home protection weapon that gives you complete peace of mind - a dog. Talk to your landlord, tell him about your situation and and get a small (yet capable) dog.
