self-defence weapon or not?

What one do you have exactly? that one looks pants :( but then again most crossbows do until you actually try em out. :p

Apologies I just grabbed an image from google images as an example, I have a Marauder Recurve Crossbow. It's nothing too expensive but still has a draw weight of something like 150lb's and fires at a speed of 200+ feet per second. Either way if someone breaks into your property and you challenge then with something like that pointed at their throat they're going to think twice!

I've never had the misfortune of being burgled but I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Purposely attack? Mate if they have a weapon, I'd chop they guys arm off if it stops him using it, law or not if someone is in my house without permission they deserve everything coming at them?

I work in security "reasonable forcez" is almost impossible to define. Just like self defense is! Like I said, if they have a weapon, I'll do what I have to to disarm them and hold them til the police arrive, like I said, my worry is if they don't face prison and come back

If s burglar breaks in to your house with a weapon, sees you and then tries to leave you have absolutely no right to attack them. If they threaten you then you can apply reasonable force, but that also doesn't mean you can simply kill them with whatever weapon you have to hand.

but if you do attack them don't permanently injure them just reasonably hurt them a bit, you can bet a jury will believe your word that he started it over his that you started it...

not that it would get that far.

And if you keep such a weapon in your bedroom close to hand then you will have a hard time explaining this to the police.

ahhaa, price is nothing when it comes to crossbows most do an awesome job unless you need to hunt something specific :p

i dont think i have seen one of those but if it has a 150ibs draw you got no worrys from some scumbag in your house!!! lol

i have a boomslang recon, nothing special and cheap! whereas my uncle has a ghost 400 for hunting and i would never, ever want to be on the end of that :D

i dont think you cant get a better, nor easier weapon to use to defend your home and family from scum.

Do you sleep with it next to your bed then?

Are you willing to shoot someone in the neck with that? I'm not sure how that could be classed as self defence.

I can't see how you'd have time to load that thing up and walk around the house with it? Surely you'd want your arms free to move rather than carrying that thing around.

Depends, if you are just using it for home protection and you are not an idiot then you wont aim at an area that will permanently injure the said scumbag.

plus, if it went to court a jury would be more inclined to be on your side with non-lethal damage to the idiot who thought it was going to be an easy day at the office stealing things you worked your nuts off for and/or protecting your family.

I personally have mine down the side of my bed on a hook that dangles off my desk (so the bolt aims at the floor at all times), you can load them and most come with safeties like any other fire-arm.

they are light, and if you own one you will become pretty fast at reloading.

shoot someone in the neck? hell no i'm not stupid. the legs/arms sure if it was for personal safety.

Errrr no - it's on the top shelf in the wardrobe.

Of course not!

I am willing to take measures to protect my property and possessions should anyone attempt to break in and steal them though.

//Edit -this thread (like many others) has strayed way off topic. To answer the OP's question:

Self-defence weapon or not?

My reply would be yes :)

you think you can hit a person in the arm or leg while they're running at you, after you've just woken up in a panic?

good luck with that, and once you've finished sticking a bolt into the floor I'm sure the bugler will introduce you to the wonder of blunt objects....repeatedly

Your post said that you'd be aiming at their throat.

So if you hear a noise in the house, the first thing you do is go to the wardrobe and pull the crossbow out?

LOL go get yourself a cross bow and see how many times it takes you (a complete beginner) to hit a moving target (4-6mph) at a range of less than 10 meters. you would be surprised. and if you want more proof soot yourself in the arm/leg and see how well you can do after that.

Not to mention what will happen if the burglar has a mate with him too. That could end up very nasty.

pint glass of water on the bed side cabinet, lob it at them :p

also tasty refreshment :D

Or a super bright torch, blind the ****ers!

The trouble with any type of weapon is that they all sound good but in reality I'd guess most people would be more concerned about the safety of anyone in the household.

Why not try something like a powerful laser pointer, aim for the eyes. Then resort to the Baseball bat when they can't see anything or are to close. I, however do sleep with a large D cell Mag-lite under my bed. But it is mainly for use when the power goes out, camping and for changing light bulbs in the dark.

i nall honestly with anything like a knife/crossbow/gun I know it would be useless for me because i know i would hesitate for long enough for them to have gotten within grappling range.

I just don't think that upon being woken up my thinking time for "is this someone i definitely want to kill" is under the 1-2 seconds it takes to close the gap from door to bed.

depends on the layout of the house, but 9/10 times could easily reload in about 3 seconds, call it 5 if your just awake/sleepy.

In the situation of confronting a burglar or burglars I'd guess that is far too long. Not to mention adrenaline will be flowing and the reality of being in a very dangerous situation will sink in.

To be honest, any burglar that doesn't run away after they hear you making noise is probably not going to be going down without a fight. So unless you have many years of martial arts and/or weapons training experience and a friend to help then it's probably going to end up nasty.
