Sennheiser HD650 - The classic beauty in a grey dress Appreciation thread!

Hi guys I finally go around to ordering a new pair of HD650's to upgrade from my K7XX's.

Question is will my current DAC/AMP (Aune T1 mk2) power these ok for now and if I was going to replace either the DAC or the Amp which is the weakest part?

The Aune will power them just fine.

The weak link in the Aune is the amp, which is pretty much just a modded CMOY.
The DAC is actually pretty decent and with the added bonus of the tube buffer for adding colour to taste via tube rolling you are good to go by just adding a better amp.

The Schiit Magni 2 works well with the Aune as DAC and Tube buffer, I've used the combo many times and with a Mullard in the tube socket you will have a very sweet sounding setup.

Would it be worth spending a little more?.i just don't want to feel the need to upgrade in a year or 2 if I could just get something alittle better now.

The Valhalla 2 looks like it fits the bill.

Well sure, the Valhalla 2 is going to sound better but then you'll want a new DAC too or you'll be getting a double dose of tubes.

The Schiit Modi Multibit would be a nice DAC to partner with the Valhalla, more musical than the AK4490 based Modi 2 Uber.

Have to say since going balanced (push-pull active ground) config with my HD600s I can't use anything else - probably not the best option if you like a warmer sound but I've not found anything else that comes close to the natural, spacious, detailed and effortlessly responsive plus vocal presentation of this setup.

A Schiit Jotunheim with dual AK4490 DACs would be nice for going balanced but they seem to be forever out of stock from the Schiit EU site. It wouldn't be a cheap route though, the Jot is £420, plus another hundred or so for the DAC module and then a balanced cable would be needed too and they don't come cheap.

The price of the balanced cables is hilarious - you can buy a replacement cable and a XLR connector and DIY your own for like £130 less than buying a balanced cable.

Emailed me just yesterday to say stock is landing imminently. Shame as I got impatient and ordered the Marantz instead.

What sound signature does the jot have? It seems a lot of people are being swept up on the hype train because power/balanced output but does it pair well with any headphones? I've read a few people saying that it's a little upfront with some headphones and after the hype settled they now prefer a more tamed amp?
From what I've researched (mine hasn't arrived yet, just dispatched today), the Jotty is a pretty neutral amp so it totally depends on how you want to improve the sound signature of your headphone / music.

For myself I'll love it with my HD6XX and possibly the HD800S in the future just because I like an accurate representation of the music that I listen to, but for some users who love warmth then I doubt the Jotty should be their go to amp, maybe Vali 2 would suit them better imo.
