Serious issues with a 5080, asking for advice

It'll be sods law that as soon as you send it back, a new driver will be released which has your issue amongst it's fixes

One never knows when the situation get worse. It might happen that I send it back, I buy a new one several weeks later once I'm lucky to find availability, and then I have again the issues on that one.
 
You mentioned something about some horiz9ntal lines you couldnt describe or are like when you wiggle the cable plugged into your TV. I had a similar problem years ago, bought a new monitor then a new gpu (not because of that but thought it would clear it up) and it never cleared it up. I was so frustrated because obviously screenshot wouldn't show it and photos on my phone wouldn't show it either but once I noticed it I couldn't unsee it. I cant remember if it was advice from a thread I posted on here or some other I fo I read but I ended up buying a proper HDMI cable (not one for the usually junk ones you get with a monitor or tv or they upsell you in PC world when buying a new tv) one from club3d and voila the problem was gone. I have not seen the issue since.

With MFG being the fakes of fake frames would they have such an affect on hardware? All I understand about MFG is it just displays a better framerate and feels awful latency wise.
 
I wouldn't RMA the card. They won't be testing it at the settings you specified and will just phob you off. Return it inside the return period.
 
Did you limit the refresh rate in windows to 60hz, i know u dont probs want to but just to test, till a driver comes out to fix it potentially.

it is not a MFG. I tried games which do not support it and the issues still happen (KCD2 for instance)

I already said it. At 2k/4K and below 144Hz I don't have issues, neither at 1080p regardless the frequency.
 
I suppose adaptive sync or the other vsync options in Nvidia panel dont help? Incase it might help the high refresh rate issue?

Tho if its ok at lower refresh rate and res then its usable till a fix does come along or advice from nvidia about it. So no need to rma then i guess which is good as be a pain to rma a new released card with probably low stock for awhile.

I've alredy tested the new driver released 572.46 but it solves nothing (as expected, there was no mention to the rtx 5000 video output issues in the release notes)

Disabling Nvidia g-sync or the v-sync in game neither solves anything.

The point is that I can still return the card to the retailer and get my money back in few days, no need to RMA with MSI.

I would keep the card for a few more time set at a lower refresh if I would have the certainty of a solution from Nvidia in few weeks, but I have not this certainty. Even more, this new driver released sets the counter to zero on a new Nvidia driver release for at least 3 weeks more.

I have only skimmed the thread so I have probably missed some key info, but…

@Markbros If this issue doesn’t appear when FPS is capped under 140fps at 4k then this is screaming at me that the problem is a ‘display stream compression’ (DSC) issue as I’ve had issues with this myself recently.

Windows and a 50 series GPU might be assuming that (as a card with a true 2.1 port) that the monitor can handle a high refresh native at 4k without DSC. However, your monitor (32GS95UE-B) cannot. Very few monitors have a 2.1 port that supports full 80gb/s. That 80gb/s bandwidth is confirmed on monitor specs with ‘DP80’.

There is no way in windows to disable or force display stream compression. The only way to kill the issue dead is in one direction - and that’s to disable DSC on your monitor AND have a 2.1 port on the monitor. Obviously that won’t work because your monitor can’t run 4k > 144hz without DSC.

As that’s not possible, try using 8 bit colour from the Nvidia control panel which should reduce the bandwidth… and see what happens.

For what it’s worth I have a 160hz 4k monitor and I was getting weird screen flickering… I couldn’t understand why. I swapped monitors and had no issues… but ONLY that monitor was 4K above 144hz which is the limit for 4K without DSC. Having capped the monitor at 140hz, there are no issues.

That was using the default monitor compatibility setting to 1.4 with DSC.
I'm not an expert but that should mean something.

If I have to lower the freq to 144hzand wthout DSC to get rid of the issues, then what is the point of purchasing a top monitor that LG presented a year ago as native 4k@240Hz, and a brand new card that is supposed to be designed to reach over 200fps on current and future AAA games? All this makes no sense to me.

That means that your old card / windows was correctly using DSC.

What I’m suggesting is that your new set-up with the 50 series card might be sending your monitor a signal that isn’t using DSC.

This isn’t impossible… it’s a new card, new drivers, windows is a total arse with DSC AND it’s a new port.

As I said, I’ve had ad-hoc issues with just going to 160hz at 4k… it was driving me loopy! In truth, I’m not even 100% sure this was my issue… but by process of elimination I do think it is.

Ahh, it’s native at 4k@240hz BUT using DSC… and in truth when DSC is working fine most people wouldn’t even be able to tell. I wouldn’t!

But it causes these incredibly annoying issues when windows keeps flipping back and forth with whether it’s using DSC or not.

The main issue you’ll read with DSC that plagues everyone with an Nvidia GPU is “alt tabbing” out of games causes the monitor to flick off for a few seconds, because the monitor / windows are freaking out trying to decide what to display and the monitor goes black. What I’m talking about is a variant of that sort of issue.

You could try researching if there’s a way to force using DSC with windows… I’m not sure there is, but I haven looked into it that much.

Another thing to try, in addition to going with 8bit colour in NV control panel, is to turn off HDR. That should also reduce bandwidth. Worth experimenting with it.

Another anmoying issue happening with the DP cable is that at 240Hz I get no sound from the DP output, no matter the resolution. If I set 2K or lower resolution then the sound gets back if I'm below 144Hz.

Nvidia have today confirmed on the GeForce forums that this is a bug and will be fixed in their next driver release.
I am unsure if the bug is the whole problem you're having, it could all be linked. But the sound cutting out when using a high refresh rate is being fixed
 
To me if it's a but this early in with nvidias known to be perfect drivers then it's goung to consistently appreaing throughout this series of gpus. On and off for each new driver. Or maybe after 5 to 10 drivers they will forget about it and remove it then it appears again.

I saw your setup. You also have an intel + Z790, a 4k@240Hz monitor and a RTX 5000, just like me. Very interesting. I undertand you do not suffer the video output issues playing at that monitor configuration, am I right? These are much more annoying than the fact of not getting sound from the video output.
If so, and after having discarded any relation with the DP or HDMI cable (check thread history for more details), I must assume that the problem simply happens with some random units. What else could be?
 
Are you sure that your sound output isn’t automatically switching to your monitor? This can happen even if your monitor doesn’t even have speakers. Sometimes, it can actually just switch to another random peripheral. For ‘reasons’.

I can confirm I have had my PC assume that my monitor (via display port) was the speakers - as daft as that sounds.

Go into your sound settings and double check what is actually set as your output device, when you lose sound. You should be able to check this via the windows game bar menu thing (Windows Key + G when in game).

Just double checking - is that what you want to happen? Where do you want sound coming out from?

If you’re trying to shunt audio down the cable as well as 240hz at 4k then this strikes me as something that could cause the DSC issues I was mentioning before. Adding audio signal might make the whole above the bandwidth limitations.

I’m not aware that DP 1.4 supports 4k @ 240hz HDR… AND audio on top of that. Whether you’ve achieved that before could be entirely due to whatever compression windows thinks is appropriate based on your GPU. If windows is assuming you don’t need as much compression with your 50 series card, the video signal might be higher than with your 4090 and this is eating into your ability to transmit audio.

What happens when you try and use another audio device, such as wireless headphones? If you can get audio out of another device other than your monitor, this pretty much cements it as a bandwidth / DSC issue.
