Serious issues with a 5080, asking for advice

I saw your setup. You also have an intel + Z790, a 4k@240Hz monitor and a RTX 5000, just like me. Very interesting. I undertand you do not suffer the video output issues playing at that monitor configuration, am I right? These are much more annoying than the fact of not getting sound from the video output.
If so, and after having discarded any relation with the DP or HDMI cable (check thread history for more details), I must assume that the problem simply happens with some random units. What else could be?

I'm not having any issues running at 10bit 240hz with HDR using Displayport and DSC (my monitor is DP1.4).
I'm running PCI-E 4.0 @ 16x, not PCI-E 5.0 if that makes any difference... I have an NVME drive up there stealing lanes so can't run 5.0 yet
Oh and I'm not running sound through it, I always use my motherboard's onboard sound.

I'm having a few other driver/app quirks, like RTX HDR not updating in real time as I adjust the sliders. I have to set them, exit screen overlay settings, and then open the overlay again for them to apply.
It's annoying but I've seen on reddit other people on 30/40 series having the same issues so I know it's not a 5000 series problem.

Also the idle power draw on the 5090FE is around 50 watts which causes the card to slowly heat up and then the fans come on... Currently there is a driver bug which means the fans don't turn off again. I'm hoping they fix the idle power draw because the 4090 used less than half the watts the 5090 is using when idle

Basically I think with the introduction of the 5000 series and DLSS 4, Nvidia's driver have become buggier. I'm just hoping it doesn't take long to fix them.

Not necessarily something that can be used to ‘solve the issue’ but something neat to remember on the topic of DSC.

One way you can tell if DSC is enabled or not is by checking whether you can enable DSR/DLDSR scaled resolutions in Nvidia control panel.

DSR/DLDSR is generally unavailable (or unsupported) when Windows is using DSC.

When these options are available, DSC isn’t being used.

One thing you could try @Markbros is reducing your resolution until you DSR options available in NVCP. Then test your audio.

Just double checking - is that what you want to happen? Where do you want sound coming out from?

If you’re trying to shunt audio down the cable as well as 240hz at 4k then this strikes me as something that could cause the DSC issues I was mentioning before. Adding audio signal might make the whole above the bandwidth limitations.

I’m not aware that DP 1.4 supports 4k @ 240hz HDR… AND audio on top of that. Whether you’ve achieved that before could be entirely due to whatever compression windows thinks is appropriate based on your GPU. If windows is assuming you don’t need as much compression with your 50 series card, the video signal might be higher than with your 4090 and this is eating into your ability to transmit audio.

What happens when you try and use another audio device, such as wireless headphones? If you can get audio out of another device other than your monitor, this pretty much cements it as a bandwidth / DSC issue.
I want to use a variety of configurations. I want the sound through the DP because I have my speakers connected directly to the monitor. That way, I can use them no matter if the input sound signal comes from my work computer or my game computer, both connected to the monitor too. On the other, hand I use headphones on my gaming computer when playing at night. They still work perfecty and moreover, every time I get a complete loss of video signal I can still hear the sound of the game through them.
