SETI@Home & OcUk Projects News Vol. 166 27th January - 9th Febuary 2012

Ahh not to worry it'll work out with seti sooner rather than later i hope.
Me and multiple virtual machines do not get along, before i started tinkering my first t4t task completed in 24 hours the next one "stuck" at 65 percent then the next at 33 percent grrrrrr ..... will leave it and try again tommorrow:)

the same happened with mine, the first finished fine but the others just go on indefinatly, there is a propper way to finish them and still get the credit

T4T tasks should run for 24 hours. If you have a task that has run for more than 24 hours you should not abort it. Use the procedure below to end the task nicely so that you receive credit for it. The task will receive extra credits for the extra time it has run.

This method can be used to terminate any T4T task nicely, for any reason, rather than aborting it. If you abort you don't receive credit; if you terminate using the method below you will receive credit.

There are 2 ways to do this. The command line method is easier and faster but requires use of the command line and the GUI method which is more involved and takes longer.

Command line method

1) In BOINC manager, highlight the T4T task (click on it) then click Properties, in the list of properties there will be an item named Directory and it will be "slots/X" where X is some number, remember that number.

2) Open a command prompt (terminal in Linux and OS X), enter

echo 86400 > "{path to BOINC data directory}/slots/X/ProgressFile"

where X is the slot directory name you found in step 1. The {path to BOINC data directory} is in the BOINC Event Log about 5 to 10 lines from the top. If the path has any spaces in it you must enclose the entire path in quotes as shown in the example above. If the path does not have spaces then the quotes may be omitted. Type 86400, not 86,400.

3) BOINC_VM should shutdown within a few seconds and the T4T task should complete normally and go to "Ready to report" status.

GUI method

1) in BOINC manager suspend the T4T task, the VM should then say Paused, if it doesn't say Paused then this won't work (you might have to wait a few seconds for it to go to paused state)

2) highlight the T4T task (click on it) then click Properties, in the list of properties there will be an item named Directory and it will be "slots/X" where X is some number, remember that number

3) open your BOINC data folder, open the slots folder and look for the folder named X (not X but the number X), open that folder

4) in the X folder find the file named ProgressFile, open it with Notepad, DO NOT open it with Word, Wordpad or any other program, open only with Notepad

5) in ProgressFile there will be a single line, delete that line and type in 86400, exactly 86400, don't put any commas in the number

6) save the file, close Notepad, doublecheck the file and make sure it's still named ProgressFile, if the name has changed then rename it to ProgressFile

7) back in BOINC manager, resume the suspended T4T task, it may then go to the "Waiting to run" state, if it does then suspend other tasks to force T4T task to run again, the VM should change from Paused to Running and run another 20 seconds or so then the T4T task should end normally and shutdown the VM.

8) if this procedure does not cause the T4T task to end you'll have to abort it

Good work Derv. You are well beyond reach now. New baby (no not a rig) due in 6 days so i will be cutting down on the electric use at home. Also i have been told that a new pram is a priority over a GPU... which i think is a bit mean.

I will just have to keep doing my bit the best as i can and try at least to stay in the top 20 round here.

j_Remos, could you not incorporate a rig in the pram? That way you can have the best of both worlds whilst having the added benefit of keeping the little'un warm. And if you're having to cut down on electrickery then you could always install a solar panel or two on there, meaning you could also crunch whilst on the move ;) :p

Good idea, but i dont think i would be getting much crunching done with the current weather.

I will just have to try and justify some more low load servers at work... i can pass the electric costs on to the customer :-D

That's no excuse. I'm planning for my 6 week old son to take over the SETI reigns when I get too old :D You'll have to post up a piccie of the litte'un when he arrives.

Swap you a pram for a GTX470? :) :)

Looks like one of my rigs is staying out of action for a while. Got shafted on MM for a cooler - no backplate with it and being told to buy one myself from Hong Kong. Not impressed! Should have bought from OCUK in the first place, lesson learnt there.

15/02/2012 21:33:46 | SETI@home | Scheduler request completed: got 36 new tasks

SO EXCITED, how sad am I? :D
