SETI@Home & Projects News Vol. 187 21st October to 29th October 2012

You Scott are turning into a right little power hungry cruncher!! Good on you and enjoy it but keep an eye on power consumption if your running a full rack of 480s n what not.
There will come a time when you will want or "need" to get something a bit more power efficient took me ages to come to my senses but I had a blast in the meantime. :)

Looking good Scott, you've certainly got the addiction. Good time of the year for it, keeps the room lovely and warm. Just glad I managed to buy your 2700k and P8Z68 board a few months back before you came to your senses :D

On another note I've had a few sinful thoughts lately about moving over to folding for a while. Not sure I should be disclosing that in this thread. In fact, forget I even mentioned it :o :p

Buy button pressed - i7 3770k ordered :D

Just waiting on the new AMD CPU's to be in stock and I'll get one of those ordered too ;)

Will probably replace the 480's & 460's with 670's soon - depending on how long it takes for the refund on the two 560Ti 2WIN's to appear in my bank account.

May even consider replacing the 570's with 670's - just to lower the lectric bill of course :D

i may snap it up if u dont lol

I think you might as well, i'm trying to decide what path to take as I really don't want power hungry cards in my systems at home which is why I currently have three 6** series cards (plus the 6 series are better for gaming)

At work I could use a 480, power usage doesn't bother me however I don't think the work PC even has PCIe power connectors so i'm again limited to either one 6pin PCIe (extension from molex) or a card which needs no extra power.

Aren't SETI releasing apps which suit the 6 series cards better and so should give a performance boost? When can we expect these?

I'm having some odd problems on my Windows 8 rig. As of yesterday I can no longer process any GPU units unless they are "high priority". Most of the time I have GPU tasks sat there saying "Waiting to run" or "Ready to start". CPU units are happily crunching away no problems.

If I restart the machine it will start crunching a set of GPU units but will stop again as soon as they are finished. No clues seem to be given in the event log.

I've not changed any settings in BOINC and it has been running fine all week. I've tried rebooting, made sure "use GPU always" is ticked on the client. There are a ton of units downloaded and waiting to go.

I'm really stumped on this one. Maybe it's a sign I should move on to pastures new :D

Any ideas chaps?

Not really sure on what it might be Dave although I did do the windows 8 thing am just about to install gpu's so if I get the same behaviour it could be an omen will let you know.
Hope you don't go to pastures new but wish you well either way, I don't honestly think there seems to be a lot of interest in anything of late, no ideas comeing forward for the competition and all that or maybe its just me ...... :)

The borkley servers are down at the moment and have been for a day or two. Your WUs will report and you'll get new work when things are sorted out.

I cleverly decided to reset my project last night so it's deleted all my WUs and can't download anything. This will be the first day off my PC has had in over a year :D

I'm tempted to sell one of my rigs to help fund the 2 690s I keep dreaming about. It'll help with BF3, not so much with SETI :D

Once in a while there are problems that take a week or so to work out. When the servers come back online they are hammered by clients reporting completed work and trying to download new stuff that it takes a few days to calm down and get back to normal.
