Hi Everyone,

I remember that there were some considerations to take when setting a SSD in order to optimise it. Cloning the O/S and transferring it over to SSD.

Can someone tell me if it is necessary these days and/or point me at a thread that would be useful for someone in my position.

Regards
Scott

you might need to do a reg tweak which is simple if your running win7,it enabled windows to install ahci drivers

if your original os install was allready set to ahci mode in the bios then youll be ok,but its needed with ssd's

It was set to IDE if I remember correctly. Also my windows 7 is running slow and is on a much larger drive than the SSD. Would it be best to start out from new and install ( set to AHCI) all the drivers and programs then clone it over? Or maybe just install everything as you would on a HDD replacing it with the SSD set on AHCI?

depends how big your hdd is and if it will fit inc os onto the ssd

best way would be to just install the ssd,set to ahci in bios and do new clean install onto it,keep hdd as it is with all the data on it inc old windows install and delete off what you dont need or leave is as it is,in an emergency you can still boot from it,but remember to set back to ide in the bios if you wanna boot from the hdd, then apply the reg tweak so you wont need to keep switching from ide to ahci

Thanks for the advise - I'm going to install from new and keep the old O/S drive unplugged till such a time as I need it. Once I have a full running and all installed (drivers and programs) version of W7 then I will make an image of this and save it in case I ever need to re-install my SSD.

Are there any other tips you or anyone else might have that are useful for a healthy SSD O/S drive?

Regards Scotty

I think setting to ahci is most important, then installing the Intel rapid storage drivers once your up and running in windows to increase speeds further, you can reduce or move pagefile if space is an issue but I find the less you mess around the better

Once you've backed up all you data you can format your mechanical hdd and add it in alongside your ssd and use it for less important programs or games or storage ect
