Am currently residing in the docklands area of London and have applied for a job in Sheffield. The only times I have been there tho have been to go to the theatre at the Crucible. So what I would like to know is.....

"What does Sheffield have to offer?"

Is it expensive to live there?
Is there a good night life?
Are there any particular areas to avoid moving to?
etc
etc

It'll be okay in 5-10 years with any luck; it's like Leeds was 5 years ago....Not quite there.

The North rocks though; come to Newcastle, it's great. ;)

No offence to anyone from Sheffield - but I hated it. Lived there for 6 months and despised every moment. The shops all are old. I couldn't find ANY nice clothes. That Meadowhall (or whatever) Shopping Centre - carp! But the worst part about it where the people. The majority of people I came across were extremely rude. I understand not everyone in Sheffield is like that - but a lot of the people I met were. I came from Liverpool - and it is totally different!

I am sure there are nice bits about Sheffield, but at the moment I cannot think of them.

I assume it cant be a bad place to live tho surely? Is leeds any good for nights out then?

**EDIT** prices made me laff - currently pay £520 + bills for a 1 bedroom flat nowt special compared to £590 + bills for purpose built penthouse with 2 double bedrooms with ensuite n basically looks the dogs danglies!

A lot of things, all depends on what type of person you are.

Read up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield

It's cheaper than where you're from, so no.

Is there a good night life?
Oh yes :D

It's got all sorts of places to go to!

All areas have their good parts and parts. Avoid Parson Cross! I'd try to stick near areas near Town/Meadowhall pretty decent areas.

Btw - Ignore Penski :p

are there many public swimming baths and also can the public use the universities?

Have a listen to the Arctic Monkeys - that's the kind of accent you can expect from most locals. It's fairly tame. If you venture out to somewhere like Barnsley (at your own risk, mind) you'll come across broader accents.

Sheffield isn't bad - it's much nicer now than it was say 10 years ago, when Meadowhall basically killed the city centre. But it's had plenty of investment, and there's lots of stuff to do there. Still a bit of a hole in certain areas, but you get those anywhere.
