Sheffield - What's It All About?

Fact, Sheffield is the greenest city with more woodland and open green spaces than any other city in Europe.

You've also got the Peak district on your doorstep.

The accent doesn't differ much from my own (which means its good btw)

Compared to London you will find the cost of living cheaper.

You will sometimes moan like a fairy at the amount of hills you have to walk up just to get to your house over the other side of the valley. However, you'll be happy with the view you have when you get there.

Street junctions are ridiculously wide and streets steep around some areas: makes driving fun .

basically, I liked it :)

Sheffield is easily the best place I've ever lived (2 years as a student)

I really wish I'd never left, and for years kept going back as that was the nearest place that had any gig life. (Brum and Manchester are too dodgy for me)

The people are ace, but it is Yorkshire, so don't expect Pimms and cucumber butties on the lawn.

.

I've moved to Chesterfield (about 12 miles from Sheffield) and I really like the area.

Very close to the countryside (literally 5 minutes and you start heading in to the Derbyshire Dales).

If you like bikes, Tuesday night at Matlock Bath (and that is pronounced bAth and not barth ;) ) is the place to be.

Close to Donington Park for racing.

Alton Towers is reasonably close (closer than London anyways).

I've found most of the people to be very friendly.

Can't say much about the nightlife apart from going to the local pub, but 3 pints cost £6 and one of those was a Guinness).

Go for it :-)

Is the the Niche all nighter still going? Finished up there once after a night around Sheff and had a great time. Lots of pretty student girls there wearing next to nothing

lived in ecclesall all my life, so my opinion will obviously be biased. i like it here, but i'm not sure i'd be saying the same had i been brought up in a different area, there is a lot of crime and un desireable areas in sheffield - but they're very easy to steer clear of. i've never felt threatened or in danger on a night out / just being outside in general, keep yourself to yourself and don't look for trouble, obviously.
entertainment is great, country side is a stones throw from my house, literally. the people seem to be average, some good, some bad. it's basically a standard place to live, but if you can afford it, you should try and get a place in the south west of sheffield, around ecclesall road south / ranmoor etc. avoid places like parsons cross, broomhill, darnall, manor if possible, they're not too nice : <
good luck, post here if you need anything specific answering, looks like there are a few of us from sheffield here!

edit - as of late, niche has been a bit dodgy, few stabbings / i think a shooting - i wouldn't go there : [

Ahhh Sheffield. I'm an international student at the University of Sheffield. Been here just over two years now and to be honest, its getting a bit boring.

The student life is decent I'd say. Night life is ok with a couple big night clubs and bars scattered throughout the city center. I've a had couple good nights out with fellow students but it hasn't been anything spectacular.

Sheffield is a lot smaller than I expected it to be and it is lacking in a few areas. I suppose my opinion is a bit biased though as back in the States, I live about 30 minutes via bus from the heart of New York City. So ofcourse the night life or shopping won't be up to my expectations.

My main problems with Sheffield are the accents and the people. Even after being here for two years, I can't understand a single thing people say. I constantly need translations from my friends. And then I need my American friend who's lived here for 8 years to translate what the translator said. The strange thing is, everyone can understand my crazy American accent without a problem.

For the most part, the people here are nice. However, I can't go anywhere with seeing atleast a few dozen chavs shouting and spitting all over the place. You'd think I would be used to this kind of behavior, being from New York and all, but I have to say that it is far worse here in Sheffield than it is back at home. Thank god we don't have chavs in the States.

i live in sheffield its not the best of places im only stayin here another year. best things about it are the parklands are huge with direct access to the countryside, by walking to. if you have a car then there are beautiful places you can escape to at weekends. as for the city its in the master planning stages a bit behind compared to places like manchester and leeds. give it 5years and it will be complete

I would have given my opinions on Sheff too but this thread seems to have the basics covered :)

Wasn't too keen on the Sheffield bashers* at the beginning of the thread, but it seemd to get a lot more support towards the end.

Sheff 4 t3h win etc etc.... :D

i've lived in sheffield all my life and even i've got to laugh at that. Both are great cities but i've never spent enough time in leeds to put one above the other.

I don't mind Leeds as much as I used to.

I just feel its a "messy" city.

Imagine a huge bag full of shops and office blocks and pubs and roads.
Now shake that bag for a few minutes and empty it out into a big pile and you've essentially got Leeds city center :D
