Sheffield - What's It All About?

lived in sheffield all my life

night life is good, clubs for all tastes, meadowhall is fantastic, just not on weekends because it gets packed, quite a few swimming baths, ponds forge probably being the best :)

Meadowhall killed off the city shops and suburbs, although things are looking better for the centre in the last few years. I'd rather be there than Derby :D

Jeez! Talk about bad press!!! :(

Talk to the people that's lived there instead of speculations.

Sheffield DOES have some good night life.

The accent is fine, nothing wrong with it, same as people from Barnsley, you'll get strong you'll get mild but it's still damn English. (None of the eee by gum rubbish that people stereotypically abuse the north with)

As a whole, it's not expensive, there are cheap places there are more expensive.

Sheffield has to offer an immensle proud city with one of the worlds finest, oldest and strongest steel industries, some cracking bands have come from there (Human League, Def Leopard, Artic Monkeys, even one of the Thompson Twins!), a city that has some good technological advancements, good night life, great friendly people, good easy accessible amenities and all in all a top place!

how far/easy is it to get to leeds from sheffield?

Its just a few junctions up the Mickey 1;)

I'm not a big drinker but I've heard from a few people that Rotherham is a better night out.

Sheffield isn't bad really. I mean, its borderline northern (everywhere below it is southern) so thats a good thing going for it. Its in Yorkshire, and the only true hole in Yorkshire is Hull, which isn't really Yorkshire any more anyway.

Leeds is amazing and is just up the M1 and there's decent rail links too.

The nightlife in Sheff aint bad I suppose. It depends what you're after though. There's a lot of scuzzy nights but of course you have Gatecrasher too. Just avoid the annoying glow in the dark children and you'll be cool :)

Also, stay away from anywhere dirty called Bramall Lane, or any buffoons wearing red and white stripes ;)

Didn't realise there were quite so many Sheffield people here.

Sheffield is a great city to live in but then I would say that. There's a good mix of night life depending on what you like. Plenty of bars and pubs that are ok but just as many to avoid. Easy to have a cheap night out with all the student orientated bars.

The City Centre is a really nice place now with the Winter gardens and peace gardens having been redoveloped recently. Fargate has most of the high street shops but i much prefer devenshire green area for shopping. Meadowhall is a hell-ish place but can be quite useful on those desperate ocassions.

The biggest bonus for me is the proximity to the countryside. Sheffield is already a very green city but being able to be at burbage/stanage or lady bower dams in 5 minutes is great.

Centertainment is a big complex with an excellent large cinema, bowling and a few ok restaurants. That's towards Meadowhall. Public transport is good with the tram, bus and train services (Leeds is 45 minutes away on the train), easy to get most places.

Actually Hull is in East Yorkshire, always has been, always was, always will be.

And the "(everywhere below it is southern) so thats a good thing going for it." is borderline insulting. Don't let the "Wise guy" status go to your head.

Terribly sorry, I thought it was Humberside because we didn't want East Yorkshire having Yorkshire in the name any more ;)

I'm sorry you're offended so easily. And yes, you're right, after Don, Underboss and Man of Honour I think I may have let the Wise Guy status go to my head. Please accept my most humble apologies.

moved to sheffield 6 years ago to go to uni, finished my degree and stayed. pretty nice place and pretty cheap. used to live near liverpool but like sheffield better, but it's just personal preference.

currently a lot of building work going on and around sheffield, so things look good for the future.

ok nightlife, but not amazing. might be dissapointing after a year if you like to go out every night.

great for sports - 2 footy teams, rugby team, don valley stadium, ponds forge pool, ice rinks and all that stuff. and close to peak district.

well placed in the country with it being in the middle, manchester 40m leeds 50m bradford 60m liverpool 70m nottingham pretty close to.

Leeds is more like 30 miles tbh

My sister lives there and has done since she started uni 3 years ago, and I hate the place :o

She lives in Broomhall atm and it's not that bad but so many of the places I've been when visiting her have been absolute holes :(

Lots of nice places though, but it (like most cities I guess) is full of contrasts.

Edit to say that my sister loves it BTW, so perhaps it grows on you like some kind of horrible fungus infection

Edit 2: The Devonshire Cat is awesome too there's one good thing about the place :)

There are some not very nice places in the city but that's like every city. the cat isn't all that imo.

Stick west of the city centre and there are some lovely areas. Ecclesall Road, up towards ecclesall road south, broomhill, ranmoor, fullwood, crookes (less so). are all nice areas.

Just finished my first year at Hallam and have to say I've warmed to Sheffield a lot. At first all you see is the late 70's-early 80's architecture and abundance of smackheads, but then you realise that all of this old architecture is well on the way to being replaced and the smackheads don't bother you as other city's do.

I had the pleasure of living on Sheffield's 'old' high-street, The Moor - which is like an early 90's Bold Street, complete with 50p shops, bric-a-brac store, daily market, and about 17 Greggs. But this is one of the only remaining testaments to the 'old' Sheffield City Centre, move on along from their and you've got high-streets that'll match any UK city.

Nightlife wise, I've only had one bad night out in Sheffield, and that was more down to friends than circumstance - so that's got to be testament to something. There's a healthy range of bars and pubs to suit all tastes both in the city and on the outskirts (consider the latter if you're a real ale man). Clubs like Leadmill and Crasher are okay but can be a bit y'okell'y for my tastes, but the likes of Plug and Tuesday Club at Sheff Union often provide a top night, with some big names too.

As people have already mentioned, the Peace Gardens, along with the Winter Gardens are just two of the new 'green' developments for public use and I like them both a lot, provide a great place to relax on a Sunny day.

The older locals are spot-on, and all really friendly (perfect example being all the real-ale old-timers you get in every pub) but most of the younger ones (i.e. the yokels) all suffer a little from Bobby Breezeblock syndrome, that is, they think they're a bit hard. C'est la vie! Luckily, quite often they don't have the brain nor the brawn to back up their mouths. However, you're not likely to run into them anyway, thanks to a healthy student population of 40,000 who do their bit to liven the City up a little.

Again, as a previous poster has already said, Sheffield is on it's way to greatness, with constant development in and around the city - it's just going to take a couple more years for it all to be finished.

But by far the absolute best bit about Sheffield (again, as previously said!) is the fact that within a 10-20 min drive, or equal measure bus journey, you can be here:

Now that's something to move for :)

Hope that helps :)

OT@olv: Nice pictures, you studying or working?

<snip>

Awesome pictures dude :)

I've lived in Sheffield for about 15/16 years and I quite like it (obviously :p ). Your pictures reminded me of a few trips out to Derbyshire, Castleton, Padley etc - all within a short drive. On a good day, like it has been recenty, its great to just drive out and walk out in the open. There are quite a few big parks in and close to Sheffield too - Graves Park, Endcliffe Park, Meersbrook Park, and Rother Valley to name a few.

There is a fair bit to do entertainment wise - as has already been mentioned. Your usual stuff like cinema, bowling etc is relatively cheap, and there are plenty of sports related places - like Ponds Forge or Hillsborough for swimming, University sports facilities are very good, two ice skating rinks, a couple of skateboarding parks etc.

When I used the public transport, I found it very extensive and reliable for the most part, but a little expensive imo. We have a decent tram network which takes you most places.

Shopping-wise, there is Meadowhall, the Meadowhall Retail Park, Crystal Peaks, the Crystal Peaks Retail Park, a few smaller Retail Parks and obviously the city centre. Loads of places to look at and shop around.

Being very much a student oriented city, there are student discounts pretty much everywhere - from general shops to entertainment venues.

As for night life, theres a wide variety of bars and clubs (surprised no one has mentioned Corporation yet ;) ) to suit all tastes in music and drinks.

Concert/event venues include the Crucible, City Hall and The 'Hallam FM Arena' but for some reason, a lot of bands and big artists seem to overlook Sheffield as a venue and opt for nearby places like Manchester or Leeds or Nottingham - which is a shame because we miss out on a lot unless you are willing to travel.

There is a lot of building work going on at the moment within the city centre and around the train station which should hopefully be complete soon - its going to be great when its done...apparently... :p

Some areas are a bit rough and crime and vandalism can be higher in these parts, but thats to be expected from any major city really. In general though, the majority of people are decent enough.
