Shotguns: Show us your clay / game / zombie bashers

Yes I was there last Sunday in fact. Very nice birds on some stands. The for but is fun, and the best for me we the first going away from the high tower, that one was a stonker!
I do like the ground, there's also quite a few ladies shooting there (so my wife doesn't feel all by herself) and quite a few amateurs of SXS ..

Here I've been invited to shoot the Perazzi at mid Wales next week as a guest.. going to have to train and pick up my game, George will be there too, no pressure

So the FAO came over last week and gave me the thumbs up, in spite of not having the medical report :D Should get my cert in 7-10 days.

In the meantime I went up to cloudside shooting grounds and had another chat with lyndsey, and then did something I thought would take longer.... bought a gun! lol. It fits me well and after putting 10 through it shot really nice. Just fell in love with the quality of it too. Its a 2014 Zoli Z Extra 12G 32" multi choke. Comes with all the bits and lovely case.

congrats.

once you get your certificate, the best feeling in the world was walking into my local grounds and buying my 1st gun. even when i bring my friend along he finds it amazing that i just walk in shout morning jim, clap the biggest oldest black lab you will ever meet and walk back out with a slab of cartridges. i say to him you have that freedom after you jump through the red taped hoops. on that note went down today and put a deposit on a beretta 692 black edition. so thats me skint for a while.

AFAIK @mikeh501 Zolis are copies of perazzis; I played with one last winter, and it did feel like a very nice gun -- they have a pretty good reputation too these days. Hope you enjoy it, but don't get too attached, it's a first gun, it's unlikely to fit you in 6 months or a year!

Even my 'fitting' Guerinni will need refining soon, I've now got bulkier shoulders and lost a bit of weight, and I'm now lower (again) on the gun, so soon I'll be at the gunsmith to get a raiser comb installed; that should keep me out of trouble until my 'next gun' -- at which point I MIGHT go for a custom stock. Really nice stocks with say grade III wood can be made completely custom for you for about ~1600.

Mid Wales shooting friday was a disaster, I was a bit tense to start with, then it got better but we had torrential rain, it was out of this world really. wet hands, wet guns, wet *everyhing* and hard to concentrate. So very 'disappointed' with my score (98/180 !!) but hey, live and learn.
I had the pleasure to shoot JUST behind the lady FITASC world champion, it was very interesting. She's really awesome, completely single minded, and I've learned a lot about where to put the gun on some of the birds...

Anybody got experience of having a shotgun refinished in Cerakote? My Browning Ultra XTR has a few marks on the barrels which are annoying me, been doing some research online and Cerakote popped up, I quite like the look of the matt midnight blue or matt silver.

I used to love shooting in the rain - it meant most people shot rubbish and I picked up a few prizes - but now I only shoot when it's warm and dry.

I was in a squad with Becky Bream at Hodnet once and we all went on this stand and made a fool of ourselves - Becky was on last and made us look even more foolish - she shot like a demon.

I was also shooting behind her on another shoot at Hodnet and couldn't believe the lead she was putting on a target so went on and did same - I hit them but if I had gone on first there is no way I would have given them that much lead.

It really does pay to be on a good squad or follow a good shooter.

I think our next group trip to Mid Wales is in Sept or Oct - Hope it's fine.

I have used NYX prescription shooting glasses since 2003 - Being as these are American I had to send my prescription over and they sent new insert back - They then had a outlet here which was handy but they only lasted a few years so tried a few UK opticians - The lenses were easy it was sticking them to rubber nose bridge - The company in US wouldn't let on what glue they used - Whatever it was it was good as none of their lenses ever came off - Unfortunately it was not like that here .

So decided to treat myself to a new pair but what to have - After scouring the net and seeing some of these at a shoot I opted for Pilla Panther 7 - As luck would have it Ed Lyons who is the importer (I think) works and lives just my side of Wolverhampton so a Saturday morning trip down and I came out with these.

I only have what you see - I didn't need the kit as I only use the colour you see - Never used any on my old pair except Light Vermilion and these new glasses fit in the NYX case -- A saving of a few hundred quid.

I only use cheapo polarized glasses from amazon. I tried a few others but I don't really see the use of the fancy ones to be fair. The polarized ones work for pretty much every clay, on any sky color I've seen. Only 'problem' is sometime if a clay is in against a dark background. But then again these are always hard to see!
Thats the ones: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01EJA4BW4

I have several pairs now. I also have Bolle polarized ones at 3 times the price, but I find the cheaper ones superior, there's zero distortion on the cheapo ones, they are very comfy too.

Anyone interested in shooting the British Open at West Midlands Shooting ground might be interested to know they are doing a re-shoot on Sat 16th Sept - 120 bird for 40 quid - just ring them and book in.

Is it the one they had problems with wind? Might be confused, I heard a shoot earlier this year that was pretty crapped out, they changed the birds, removed a stand etc...

You are quite right - for some reason even before I started in 1984 they were called birds - We even had a big Farm fair or something that had a Clay shoot set up with a Duck flush and anti hunting were outside the gates protesting - The ducks were clays - It's just a name to give you an idea of what the clay targets are doing.

Wasn't that shoot weeks ago - The British Open is on at WMSG from 30th August till 3rd Sept.-- re-shoot is 16th Sept - Tom (owner) keeps the traps set up for a re-shoot as it normally pulls in those who messed up on original shoot and people like me who are not members of CPSA so can't shoot it on the day.

I'm off to hodnet this morning for my random shooting session - from the reports posted online this shoot is very good apart from last years winner moaning about one ref calling one bird lost when he claims to have dusted it so thinks he's hard done on not getting the 115/120 that he believes he shot...

If you have the chance to shoot the rerun go for it as West Midlands shooting ground is the best in the country ( or at least it is for me)

Mid Wales Shooting Ground.

I will be there on Saturday with the lads on a shooting day out- all old blokes - So if anyone is there look out for me - small bloke with grey crew cut hair -pot belly and bow legs - if it's not raining will have shooting vest on with union jack flag on it.- Got my name on as well - Dave - Also we will be ones smiling so you can't mistake us for DTL shooters. :D:D - will be there most of day till around 4-5 o clock. :):)

Unlucky that -- we're around, but we've got guests to cart around, so no shooting :-/ -- Hope for you John has kept some of thands he has for the Perazzi in july, he had some cracking birds!

Well, I DID manage to sneak out today and got the 410 out for a 100 sporting. That was fun! Broke pretty much each of the birds, at least once. Bar the invisible-mjni and the extreme-teal mostly. I had a lot of fun too!

There's some nice birds, even if he did remove the Perazzi stands unfortunately.

The weather forcast isn't very good for tomorrow - If I wasn't meeting a lad there to give him some guidance I wouldn't go - Still I can take some 21g and do DTL with O/U -- O/U have always kicked my cheek.

Got to Mid Wales this morning and it started to rain and rain and rain - by time everyone had turned up and had breakfast we were ready to go at nearly 11.00 and it stopped raining - The rest of day was dry as a bone - what a nice day it turned out to be.

Got down to the sporting layout and found the Teal - piece of cake - moved on round then eventually got to stand 8 - another Teal - There was 8 of us in group so that meant 32 Teals - A grand total of 5 were hit :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused: This was the stand you were talking about - Capt Birdseye (Bob) hit two and he left his glasses in car - young lad hit two but he just threw gun to his shoulder and pulled trigger - last one we think he just shut his eyes. - In all the years I have been shooting clays this is only the second Teal I have seen like that and never saw the first one hit at all.

I am glad to report that my form has returned - been off now for a few years and managed a respectable 82 x 100 - also picked up 1000 Hull Super Fast for a reasonable price.

Glad I went as a good day was had by all :D

Glad you had a great time! At that same time, i was carting my tourists around the Elan Valley, Abbey (via the small roads) then Borth, then back to LLanlidloes via long the mountain road -- stopped at the Mid Wales *art* center (not far off the shooting ground!) then back to Rhayader. 120 miles total on twisty roads, I can tell you I deserved that pint I got when I arrived :-)

Next time I'll shoot my 12 instead of the baby 410 -- I *have* found a way to shoot the extreme teal, but it wouldn;'t work with the 410 -- (16g 5's I was shooting!) To hit it, you need to shoot about 1/2+ barrel *over* the highest point it will reach. What I've figured is that by the time it 'peaks' it must be 80+ yards, your pellets are no longer flying straight but are starting to plateau/fall, so you need to take that into account and shoot *over* the damn bugger.

Still, heaps of fun!
