Shotguns: Show us your clay / game / zombie bashers

Just picked this up today, good job it's brilliant fun to shoot and reliable because in my opinion these are a lot of money for something that is very cheaply built and feels very plasticy. A Vortex strike eagle will be first to go on.

Smith & Wesson 15-22 Performance Center .22LR, 25 shot magazine is in the post.

Ooh Gen 2 - shot it yet? Not much to say on these, they just work great - its a .22 and knows it. Presumably its for your practical shooting or just plinking? Get a 50 drum mag, you know it makes sense :D

Shot a few of them before but putting the first rounds through it next week. It's just for 25m gallery shooting and a bit of practical, with this and my .22 LBP I have a couple of little .22's to shoot at the club which will keep me amused while I save for a .308 Ruger Precision Rifle & scope.

Yeah that's what I thought about my CMMG when I bought it 3 years ago....about £2k later and I still haven't finished modding it to the point where I am 100% happy! It ain't far away now though. (Only the lower receiver is in the original condition lol)

This is because...

Cmmg, was that a base cmmg or a Lantec version? I was originally after a Lantec modified version but could not bring myself to part with over 1k for a .22 not to mention about a 2 month waiting list.

After about a year it looked like this:

By this stage I had replaced the dust cover, sent the barrel off to a gunsmith (to lap the base, cut off 2 inches and recrown), put on a Spikes SAR freefloat foreend, replaced the Vortex with an aimpoint and put on a Hardy's moderator.

Now it is like this on the left (friends 9mm lever release on the right):

I have put on a UBR stock, changed the charging handle to a Rainier arms raptor, changed the grips to Magpul, fitted a new trigger guard, trigger, bad lever, extended mag release, ambidextrous safety, messed with the firing pin fitted a better mag adapter (to take MP15-22 mags), switched back to the Viper but added a Venom reflex sight on a 1 o'clock mount. That is not all because I did lots of messing and tinkering on the guts.

The upshot is the gun is rapid to operate and obtain target, laser like accurate with fast follow shots, ergonomic for me and possibly the most important of all - never ever ever jams or fails to fire (which it would do probably 10% of the time as stock).

It now wants a nice set of Troy folding ironsights and I think I am good :D

/Sorry for the potato camera on the last shot - I moved house and no longer keep my guns at home. Turning up at the gun range with a fancy DSL camera would be a bit odd!

/Also sorry for derailing a shotgun thread, if it helps this would be my go to gun in any zombie scenario.

Very nice, would not be happy leaving something of such value at a club though.

Makes me wish we could have proper .223/5.56 AR's and not have to go with straight pull.

Is SGC's lever release too heavy, or does it have other drawbacks?

I have not shot one of their lever releases I have seen them etc but they are just not same as proper gas AR-15 semi, they still take some time between shots. Don't get me wrong I would still love to have one, especially in pistol caliber 9mm or 45.

There's also the price.

Yeah, the price is pretty eye-watering. I know very little about rifles and less about prs, but isn't .223/5.56 the smallest you can get away with? Sure I read a report that implied most participants were using .308/7.62

How do you mean participants?

They do 9mm / .45 ACP lever releases I would probably go for one of them as they allow that on 2 out of the 3 ranges at my club, also much cheaper day out than using .223.

For 100m bench resting etc I would go with a straight pull .223 (or save some money and buy a cheaper bolt action) but for faster lever I'd go cheaper pistol rounds and use shorter ranges.

No it is quite light and nice to use. It allows you to keep your eye on target between shots which is not always something you can do with straight pull. Straight pull is slicker than bolt action as closing the bolt causes a twisting motion on the firearm that means you often have to re-acquire the target.

If I were to get a lever release type gun I would personally go for the Vz58 Mars, if your going to go semi-semi-auto then you need a cheap round and Russian surplus 7.62x39 fits the bill!

As I say, I know very little about the topic, but this was the piece -

"I'm the only person taking a 223 (5.56) calibre weapon, everyone else who is going are taking 308 (7.62) or bigger."

Interesting - some more reading material. Thanks.

Well, I'm getting my 'workhorse' SxS back from the gunsmith today; been all redone, re-jointed, serviced and it's good to go! Well, I'm going to have the barrels re-browned for extra pimp effect. Can't wait to shoot it, and the season to start ;-)

Here's the old girl. 1880 (<- you are reading this right) and tight as a ... err lets keep this a family forum shall we :) The details on the engraving is exquisite really ; that gun has been shot, but has been treated very, very well.

Added the butt pad, the stock was a bit short. I *might* get a new stock cut (and keep the old one) if I make this my main game gun. Also, the barrels are going out for re-browning, to enhance the contrast of the damascus steel...

Not sure if anyone else shot the benelli semi auto comp last weekend but just wanted to say what a fantastic competition Southdown gun club put on with great targets and the weather made it a dream to get around.

I managed 106/120 which put me 6th in A class which is my best score for this competition and as it was my first shoot since Xmas it put a smile on my face.
