Shotguns: Show us your clay / game / zombie bashers

Shotgun for ratting? I am sick of using a silenced air rifle, the damn things hear it go off, see a dead mate and disappear for hours. I can put corn down and see ten in a small area, maybe, 2 square feet, but my 12g Remington 1100 is OTT, noisy and expensive on cartridges, plus it has a full choke barrel so I get 2 or 3 at best in one shot. Good for foxes with BB's in it though! Is it a sensible thought to look at a smaller gauge, perhaps with a moderator on it, that has a barrel with a wide spread? If so, what, and what choke barrel? I've got a semi antique "garden gun" but the brass cartridges are silly money, hard to get, and it's a bit of a toy, and I get one rat at best per shot.

Poison isn't a viable option as I have dogs and they may find the bait or eat a dead rat that has taken the bait. The joys of living in the sticks with exotic birds that mean a near constant supply of grain for rats....Thanks.

steel plate underneat/back/side, and use steel cartridges so all the pellets bounce back forever, killing all the rats in one large swoop? :-)

Seriously, the 'silent' shotgun option is still way more noisy than a springer... Your only option is to make a bit trap, and shoot them after closign the door...

If they are running off at the sound of a silenced air gun, forget any kind of shot gun.Trust me even a hushpower 410 (silenced) is louder than your average silenced air gun.
I use my weihrauch hw100 for ratting and it is almost silent..more often than not i can shoot a few of them before they get spooked.
Main thing with bait is dont give them any solid items they can pick up and run off with, coffee, peanut butter liquidized corn work really well.

New accessory for my SMLE.

Wilkinson 1907 pattern 17" sword bayonet. Dated May 1918 so exactly 100 years old, and 1 year younger than the gun!

Is anyone doing the world sporting this week as it should be a cracking shoot with Mr digweed setting the targets

I'm tempted, but I'm afraid to be a washout... I don't do competitions usualy -- so I'm completely unprepared, but it's tempting, they are just around the corner from me! I think I'll message Rob and see if he can convince me :-)

As a last minute decision I went to Kingsley Moor near Stoke on Trent today - shot my socks off with a 80x100 - but I did straight 5 stands which makes me think it was an easy shoot -I shoot bird only - It did cheer me up though as my shooting lately has been diabolical

It will be my second shoot of the year with a new gun so should be interesting to see what scores I get

Turns out I've booked myself for the FITASC tomorrow -- I went earlier to see the targets (I'm 10 minutes away). It's though -- but shootable, apart maybe one fo the stands that looks tough.

The Sportrap looks *though* -- just looked at one stand there, and everything is 40+y away, they even have a rabbit a good 40y away, I can tell you I haven't seen many people break it!

Otherwise, some 'fun' things, very quick, and at least one blue target on... blue sky!

Pack plenty of water, it's really scorching out there.

Don't forget to put your water bottles in freezer night before - take then in plastic bag and as they thaw out you have ice cold water for most of the day.

Shot white clay's in thick fog (clay classic in Wales) and white clay's over snow (Hodnet)

Good luck with the FITASC

Good tip for the water. I'm planning to sit out between parkours in my car with the AC on... it's a whole day after all... not terribly eco-friendly, but none of the buildings have AC at E.J...

Looks like my shoot on Saturday is a hot one with Sunday having a chance of rain - I’m hoping they have water stations on each course

they have water bottles. but I have to say I was a bit disappointed with the setup. for FITASC at least. you get a water bottle pack dumped there and here, and apart from the referee you see /nobody else/ -- while there are hundreds of people near the clubhouse doing... **** all. You'd think there'd be some sort of manning, apple basket, someone who'd be careful not to have the water bottles *in the sun*, or someone who'd decide to have cartridge bins in the right place, or a stupid gun rack on the metal scafolding stand, but no.
Instead you get dozens of 4x4 trucks driving too quickly on the very dusty tracks and annoying everyone else walking by.

I have never seen fruit at a UK shoot unless it's changed in last 12 years - In the US they have cold water dispensers and fruit on each stand - You do really need it there - I got sun burnt on a overcast day.

I don't think I could shoot in this heat though !

So i've booked myself for the Perazzi Grand Prix at Mid Wales, friday 10th. Anyone else shooting this one? I'll also do the SxS championship at Atkins,Grant&Lang later in august...

Quick question for the shooters...

I'm about to buy my first gun - a relatively inexpensive Armsan semi-auto - £400 new.

Should I expect to be given the mildly scuffed shop display gun, or should I get given a different gun from an unopened box?

I'm in 2 minds. I'm not overly careful with my stuff, and I can easily imagine adding a few scuffs of my own in short order, but similarly I can see possibly not getting the chance to shoot as often as I'd like and in 2yrs time having a gun to sell with no marks other than the ones already on it...
