Shotguns: Show us your clay / game / zombie bashers

Quick question for the shooters...

I'm about to buy my first gun - a relatively inexpensive Armsan semi-auto - £400 new.

Should I expect to be given the mildly scuffed shop display gun, or should I get given a different gun from an unopened box?

Depends if being sold as new or ex-display, for a scuffed ex-display I would be looking for a discount.

Sold as new.

As I say, minimal marks, and I'm asking really to see what people think in principle. I've make use of the fact they have a gun out on display - but selfishly I'd still prefer a pristine gun.

They may very well just go out the back and get a new one but I wanted to gauge people's views in case they didn't.

My word - is it that long since anyone posted on this thread-- July 10th 2018.

Garnet - At £400 I wouldn't worry to much - Just take it out and put a 100 cartridges though it to make sure it cycles without any fail to feeds then enjoy it.

Things have happened since last post - Oakedge (Shugborough) has stopped shooting on a Sunday so no CPSA shoots but they are open for practice Tuesday to Sat.

I hear Dovey Valley has new owners or tenants and have closed the ground for refurbishment - Club house -tidy up grounds and fix traps and not before time - I last went there over 10 yrs ago because of the state of it but will give it a try this year.

Went to Catton Hall Sunday just gone for their last Sunday of month 100 birder. - It was heaving - never seen so many shooters at a shoot for years - cars were parked in wood on drive and sure if they could- would have parked on tree branches as well - It reminded me of the English and British opens in late 90s before squadding - At those shoots the wait was so long we used to mark our cards in the corners with red felt tip pens so when you looked at markers hand holding cards you could see how far down the list you were - Well I did this Sunday - It was the longest shoot I have been to for quite a few years - Did enjoy it though - met people I haven't seen for years.
It's good to be back in the fold as they say. - I also hit 73 which considering the silly ones I missed it wasn't too bad for me.

Completed the Benelli semi auto competition yesterday with an average 97/120 which isn’t bad for my first shoot this year but missed some very simple targets. So next shoot is next Saturday at hodnet for the English open which should be great as it’s an awesome shooting ground.

Well done on the 97x120

Good luck on the English - Tom puts on some very good targets.

I shot there on Tuesday night and had a go at Loopy skeet - They have put a battue trap behind high and low house so you get high and low loopers - missed first few out but ended on pleasing 18x25. -- Also my A300 broke during the 50 bird sporting. The end of the action bar that slots in bolt snapped off - gun still worked but packed up after 3 stands just in case.

Did a 60 bird today at Hilton with my old trap gun and 21g - hell it is heavy and didn't get my eye in till last few stands.

A mate got his SGC and a silver pigeon 30”, i’ve been a couple of times at a club hiring a SP 28” (i’m 6’4 with long arms) which make it stupidly quick to move.

Looking at the moment before getting a SGC and either SP or a Blaser f16. The attraction is having a consistent gun and cheaper in-bulk cartidges. Would also look at a couple of lessons.

Cartridges are pig stupid in price - ripped off again by money men who keep commodities high - lead went up -cartridges went up -lead came down cartridges stayed high.

It's not a cheap sport anymore.

Yep, steel shot also not cheap! Even with 'proofed' barrels often the chokes aren't steel proofed (there's £100 right there). SP prices rose from £1500 to £1800-2000 all on demand.

Here my shooting is creeping back after a back injury over the winter. I was pretty mighty in november, and had a trapped nerve around xmas and took forever to heal. bummer! I still shoot my guerini invictus V, not missed a beat for 3 years, still look excellent and I recently compared it with a K gun and quite frankly, they could be 'brothers' -- grip, size, feel and balance are pretty much the same!

With shooting picking up I was High Gun at our syndicate clay shoot -- interesting format, one shooting stand, 5 clays shot at random, in trees! 25 clays per session, 3 sessions. I ended up 49/75 (Tough format!) which was sufficiently good to do the shootout with another guy (pretty good shot, with a K gun :-)) we leveled at 4/5 on the shootout, and I won the sudden death with 4 clays for his 3. Fun!

I shoot MOSTLY CompX 28g fibre; I pay £191/1k -- I know I get better pattern with something like F-Blue, but the fiochi are quite a bit kickier, and more expensive as well -- also they are plastic which is a bummer of a lot of grounds. I tried F-black but I don't like them, they are even kickier in my experience. I can still shoot all the clays I want with my little CompX, and they fit in all my guns, even the 140yo hammer.

Luckily I only shoot three or four times a year so the cartridge cost doesn’t really impact - so after this Saturday open shoot I have the beretta world in June which will be extra special as I’m hoping my GF will join me on the trip south as my fiancée.

How did you get on at the English ? - What was it about stand 15 that messed up every ones card - I counted only two 7x8s and a lot of zeros.

Tom is running a re-shoot next week - unfortunately I can no longer walk that ground as hills do my knees in. - would like to have seen stand 15.

Not great but it was good fun ( 78/120 ) I had three bad stands and went round in about 2.5 hours which is down too Tom and his team knowing how to put on a world class shooting competition.

Stand 15 was awesome with a vertical dropping rabbit and then a teal - managed to hit a pair with skeet shells and LM choke (they were the only ones I hot on that stand). One chap hit the full 8 on Friday which is amazing.

I’ve cancelled my entry for the beretta shoot next month as I don’t want my GF watching me cry as barn doors fall off their hinges with laughter.

Take heart - A AAA class shooter also hit 78 - Do you do the Tuesday night shoots ?

Have you seen this shoot - https://mickleyhall.com/events/eley-grand-prix-2019/ I shot it last year - it's more interesting than normal shoot as you get full use of gun on two singles -one pair and one on report pair - the best for me is it's all on flat ground which makes it a boring ground but at least I can walk it.

I work near haydock so wouldn’t be there in time for the Tuesday shoot - I had looked at the shoot at Mickley hall but it clashes with my GF coming over from Kazakhstan for their summer holidays so need too max out the time with her as I’m proposing whilst she’s here ( note she’s a school teacher work at a private school over there and originates from Eccleshall and not a Russian bride as most think :D.)

I'm not a happy bunny. Took my shotgun out yesterday for a fun day on clays with friends and I've broke the firing pin on the bottom barrel. Assuming new pin and spring any guesses on price? It's a rizzini o/u but I'm not certain which model

Do you know how old the gun is? There are 'two' rizzinis - the earlier one have a rather bad reputation for reliability, the modern ones seems to be a lot better. I don't think it'll cost a bomp to fix tho, it's bread and butter for a competent gunsmith...

Not sure how old it is. I bought it about 13 years ago second hand. Was already well used then as the bottom barrel had some scoring then.

Not unexpected to have to put a new set of firing pins into a competition gun of that age.

If it makes you feel any better, both my Japanese Browning B525 and my Miroku Mk38 Needed new firing pins within 10 years of purchase (both brand new).

Can I ask how much they cost to repair so I know roughly what to expect

£50-ish. This was over 10 years ago and both were done by the gunsmith at the shop I purchased them from, so you might be looking at a lot more now.

Also, I seem to remember being told that most of the Japanese Brownings and Miroku O/Us have common firing pins, so they probably had a bunch in stock.

I’d find out who’s your nearest Rizzini dealer and give them a call as they might have to order the parts in.
