I see it as a matter of good will because it's hardly like we couldn't get them loaned back to us for free for periods of time, but it won't be free if we keep being childish about it.
Also considering how many thefts have happened from supposedly secure museums... we're hardly a great arbiter of safe 'preservation'.

They need to go back. Frankly I think it’s immoral that we still have them. We’ve had them long enough they deserve to be reunited.
We would feel the same way if someone had Stonehenge for example.
The PM cancelling a meeting with the Greek PM is frankly embarrassing.
What they've already done to great effect, make our Prime Minister look like a petulant child.

Why does the artifact need to be in Greece? You're saying it belongs to the Greek government, even though a previous administration sold it on?

Ignore the fact that the archeology to recover them was done and paid for by us after they’d sat there deteriorating for thousands of years.

If you look at the state of the Acropolis which Greece considers a 'national monument' those stones are better off staying in the UK.
I don’t think it’s got anything to do with apologising for the past. It’s simply a recognition that they are part of an allied nations rich heritage and belong quite rightly where they originated.
You don’t have to say sorry for it, it just seems more than reasonable to look at these things on a case by case basis and there’s clearly a very sound argument for handing them back, even if they were purchased. A gift back to Greece for example. At the very least a conversation about sharing them and perhaps other items with Greece in return.
