All depends how good a hacker he is and if he wants to go straight. If he did hack high level stuff, then he should be offered a job. If he isn't then he should be arrested and charged under British law. Crimes like this, where there are no victims should not be expedited, especially when our laws cover it.

If it was murder or he sold information from the army etc, then he should be expedited.

Would it be the whole fault of the burglar if you were to leave your front door wide open and go to work?

yes, because he/she chose to do it.

The crime was comitted on British soil .

that's debatable, if the servers are on American soil, then technically he broke protection on thier soil. kinda like lock picking an embassy gate you might be on one countries soil but you are doing something illegal on another's.

Although I would be quite happy for him to be tried here, scentanced to a very long time. But secretly put to work for us. (ie given a decent place to live (no computer access though) and having to work for our security services) if he;s good. if he's **** send him to the yanks as a show of good faith.

Catch me if you can springs to mind. That guy was used in the fraud section of the FBI. But hacking is hacking, it should send messages out to everyone and the repercussions of doing it.

But i'm just jealous that I cannot code :D

No one has suggested he's a terrorist, so why are we continuing to allow the yanks to deport white collar criminals using legislation supposedly to counter the terrorist threat. Also the US-UK extradition treaty impinges on Habeus Corpus one of the oldest and most important rights of the land.

I'd kick the European Arrest Warrant into touch as well.

Let's protect liberty and democracy by eroding liberty and democracy, horse crap.

Personally I don't think the American justice system is entirely fair. Whilst the workings of the courts may be unbiased the process itself can destroy you whilst you wait for trial with the cost alone. Look at the Natwest 3 they had to plea bargain or be left in penury.

A despicable erosion of hard earned rights. I hate this Government.

He should be deported for simply being a slack cracker and not hiding his idenitiy, and letting himself get caught so easily. :p ;)

Am sure if he has actually downloaded any information on free energy etc he could have had a bargaining tool, but as he didn't, they will be making an example of him. :(

My God.

He is going to get Botty raped by Yanky crimbos for being on his PC & hacking :(
From what I've read the guy was an amatuer & sort attention, Well he's certianly going to get plenty of attention now isn't he, Only it will be with big hairy yanky crimbos & no KY :p
The 70 years in my opinion is to deter others & rightly so, More & more young'uns are on PC's these days & they need to be scared to hack Certain targets.
Even if he gets 70 he'll probably do 10 & then there'll let him serve the rest out over here.
Sucks to be him.

He's not that good, he went looking for US Government IP's and logged in using default admin passwords, he then done a netstat to find other IP's connected and tried to login to those, carelessly looking for information regarding UFO's :D

yep, if you're going to hack military targets, you'd better have another military as your employer :p

Nah the yanks have **** loads of prison space and don;t mind using it, he'll probbably serve most of it, or if he;s good the yanks will probbably put him to work while claiming he's in a secure facility.

What an absolutely stupid question. Theft is always the fault of the burglar regardless of the security.

Tell that to the insurance company.

70 years is extremely excessive, especially considering the Chinese are doing what he did every day.

@Tefal
If he was any good mate he wouldn't have got caught ;)
This is to stop others causing them trouble just by trying, A 70 on some Numpty who is stupid enough to get caught will keep the majority of attacks at bay.

I dunno if he managed to get to sensitive information, that has military or political merit, then he's good enough. If you're working for a foreign power especially a nuclear one, all they can do is say "the brits/Chinese/yanks" hacked us, and that's if they want to lose face in the form of appearing weak.

only people who can be charged need to be undetectable. (And I'm, sure such people exist)

yep, if it keeps out the amateurs it's good enough, their the ones who will wind up costing lives, as foreign powers just use the info for political one-upmanship, or future war plans.

This post makes all your posturing in previous posts redundant.

Of course he dosent deserve to be deported and given 70 years, its crazy to suggest such a thing. The US originally offered him a 3-4 year sentence if he flew there to turn himself in, but refused to put it in writing, this is much more in line with a reasonable punishment.
