Should we move to Oz?

Isn’t there major weather issues there I.e droughts and flooding?

Not the safest place to live with everyone pushed out to the edges

I'd say go for it, timing wise it sounds perfect with your daughter having reached adulthood but before you yourselves have got too washed up, so you can go out there and enjoy it.

Keep in mind the cost of living is extremely high, so make sure there's a lot of money on the table. Even silly things stand out, like bananas costing more in Australia than the UK despite them being grown in Australia versus imported into the UK. It's probably over AUD$10 for a beer. Last time I looked, which admittedly was a number of years ago, Melbourne housing was also very expensive for anywhere remotely central, you need over a million dollars for anything decent.... although I say this as someone who has only been there once, bit of window shopping, had colleagues who worked there for a few months, so do your research and you might find different.

They can make you uncomfortable. Putting up a tent I felt something bite me (this was near the Twelve Apostles in Victoria). Wasn't particularly painful at the time.

30 minutes later I'd have chopped my own hand off with an axe given the chance. It was furiously painful, felt like my whole arm/hand was in boiling oil. Local hospital were brilliant - pumped me full of something that killed the pain fairly quickly, and gave me a mixture of anti-venom stuff as they didn't know what it was.

Following day I was just sore, but at the time - I cannot describe how painful it was aha. Would not recommend.

If you are into water sports can you live sufficiently close to the sea (not too expensive) to visit on whim - early morning swim that kind of thing, life affirming .. what is the reality like ?

It was either a large spider or a small snake apparently. Large spider = cool, you'll be fine. Small snake? We'll stare at you to see what starts bleeding out of where :Dit didn't look like that when it first happened (couldn't really see anything tbh). We* were smart enough to have a hunt around to see if we could find anything obvious but then like I say, it didn't really hurt much when it happened. I knew it had happened - made me pull my hand back from putting up the tent. Just didn't feel that serious.

As a side note a few days later got out of my tent to this aha.

*Australian lass, who kept staring at me waiting for me to explode.

Yes, you can, absolutely. Bondi beach (I'm only mentioning Bondi because that's where people know) is about 40-60 mins by car to the CBD in the mornings. Far faster out or the rush (probably 20-30 mins?). Far nice beaches to swim at though.

Melb I don't know so much from that perspective. St. Kilda is about 20 mins from the CBD but then Melb doesn't have anything like as nice beaches locally. Sydney you have a TON of choice.

You'll love it or hate it, know people who moved and are really, really happy but one of my friends moved and came back within 6 months as he just didn't like.

Probably as they expected him to actually work and he is lazy as hell though :D

The wife has been offered a good job in Oz (Head hunted). We have a choice of Melbourne or Brisbane, 5 year contract, fully sponsored, which is a good thing as we are otherwise ruled out by age.

What are peoples thoughts? anyone lived or worked there before? We only returned to Europe in 2021 after 10 years in Vietnam, so not really settled yet, but hadn't anticipated another move. This one will be different too, we will be leaving our 19yo daughter in the UK, though she is very easy about that. I won't plan to work, so will be looking to meet people, get into other activities etc.

Melbourne or Brisbane? any advice? would really appreciate knowledge and experiences.

I guess we will probably go, though I don't think the Oz economy is as good as it once was, just a long way.
I can't offer any advice, but I would definitely go! Uk is going down the drain, I have no optimism about our future.

Does the sponsorship mean that you will be able to stay long enough to get citizenship? Will your daughter have the right to join you later if she wishes? I think there will be alt better opportunities in Australia for someone her age.

Do it! I'm hoping to go and spend more time on the Gold coast in the future once i get my citizenship here in NZ.

My sister in law lives in Brisbane so have been over there a few times and been to Melbourne whilst I’ve been over there. If I were to move over there then it would be Melbourne all day every day given the choice over Brisbane. That said, Aus really isn’t my thing

My youngest brother lived out in Brisbane for 6 yrs and absolutely loved it. His wife a gp got a very good opportunity out there and they both made quite a bit of money.
Ended up moving to Canada because they felt they were too far from family.

As for myself, I think I’ve mentioned that my wife has been offered a great opportunity out in Barbados. We have put the wheels in motion because simply put we would be crazy for not taking the opportunity of a lifetime. She would be making triple what she makes her and what better place to do it when surrounded by beaches and tropical weather. We both have been there quite a few times since the lockdown ended and we both fell in love with the tiny island.

Plus the UK is getting more and more worse. Hopefully be out of this place by end of the year or early next year.
