Not really a backbox as it doesn't have any proper rear silencers, just one on each exhaust about half way down the car.

Actually, it really scared me when I saw it the first two times, and I haven't found a single thread anywhere else on the web about it, but it's the diesel particulate filter actually cleaning itself out! Plus the smoke looked & smelled normal, there was just more of it, I knew it wasn't anything failing.

I asked one of the mechanics in the dealer when I was getting other warranty work done, and he said that it happens every 3 to 4 weeks depending on driving style. I've since kept a note of the dates and he was exactly right. The filter opens up to clear out whatever's built up in the exhaust, and can last up to 20 - 30 minutes but in my experience more like 10 - 15 minutes. Only comes out of one of the two pipes at any time too. It's a new feature of the E60 apparently but it's desperately bad looking because the smoke it kicks out is ridiculous. If I'm driving through town I try to make a quick exit and clear off somewhere where nobody can see it :D
I can only agree with it cleaning itself though, mechanics working on my dad's car said that so many diesels (usually wives' cars) have problems with power output because they're never driven hard, so soot builds up - to fix it they just give it a thrashing up the road for a few miles to clear the crap out of the exhaust.

Not actually sure if a diesel does that when cold, so just ignore me if I'm talking garbage.

This happens after maybe driving for 20 or 30 minutes sometimes so isn't heat related.
Yes, diesel engines with a whack of miles on them do smoke a fair bit when cold. It happens to engines of all ages, just in varying amounts really. But my 270,000-mile Merc sitting in my parents house coughs and smokes if it hasn't been driven in a few days, but still nowhere near the quantity of smoke in the pic above :)

My cousin followed a 535 down the motorway recently and said it blew off the same thing for a period of time.
It was explained to me by one of the mechanics in the dealer the car was bought from, all I can do is ask a mechanic in another local dealer, but I can only assume this guy knew what he was talking about. If driving along the motorway it's quite hard to notice in the rear-view mirror unless knowing to look specifically for it. That's maybe why people don't notice it all that often.

I mentioned it to a friend who said almost immediately it could have been a dodgy lambda sensor, and the symptoms are similar, but surely the symptoms would be constant rather than once every 3 - 4 weeks :confused: But yeah, I maybe should, or if you know of someone yourself, maybe give them a bell :)
 
Try posting on one of the BMW forums - it may well be normal but I've never experienced it on any of the BMW diesels I have driven nor followed. The only time you get smoke out the back is when the driver hoofs it. Certainly never at idle..
 
A DPF is either regenerated by increasing exhaust temps to allow the accumulated soot (carbon) to be burnt off, this can be done via a post injection strategy to allow some fuel to continue burning in the exhaust or a close coupled combined Cat/ DPF unit.

When the DPF reaches temperature (around 600C) then the carbon will simple be burnt off through combustion diesel exhausts emissions are around 15% oxygen as they always run with an excess of air and will produce black smoke.

It won't regenerate at idle thats for sure. Is it the BMW 164PS engine? As this is a continuously regenerating DPF.

It started regenerating while I was in the middle of driving, but I pulled over to see (and smell) what was wrong and took the above photo, that's why you see it there. I started & stopped the engine a couple of times back then and it kept doing it, and the third time it stopped. But being better educated now, I keep driving the car until the process has completed. It's only happened about 5 times mind you, given that I only got the car in May of this year.

Also the fact that it only ever comes out of one exhaust pipe means that it's something set by the car. If something's phuct in the engine it would be coming out both pipes I'd imagine. And yes, Simon, it's blue smoke.
Wikipedia have an article on it but it doesn't really explain a lot more to me.
