I think i'll go for the 650 version tbh. There's quite a few cracking examples about and i could do with the cheaper insurance to begin with.
Already found what exhaust i'm going with as well... as you do with a V-Twin, the exhaust is a must because it's a FACT that they are the best sounding bike engines :p
It's the Mivv Oval, comes with de-cat collectors :)

Hopefully next year i will have the 2 in my garage. SV650/S and '13 Street Triple R, then i'll be set.

Potentially getting a new bike this weekend but I'm really undecided. Got my eyes on an R6 and R1, both 08 models with 2000 & 4700 miles respectively both around £5.5 mark. Can't make up my mind, really like the idea of having a 1000 as it's something I've really wanted to try and I love the looks of it. The down side is the insurance (£1200 TPF&T) and parts are seemingly more expensive, reading about a lot of 07-08's suffering valve issues too and a few other expensive common faults.

On the flip side I did a track day on an 08 R6 and I was following an 09 Blade around and I was quicker through the turns but it would out drag me a bit in a straight line but not as much as I would have expected. Really fun bike to ride and a big improvement over my 00 R6. Insurance is half the price of the R1 and reading around they seem really bulletproof.

Part of me is thinking to get the R6 for now, I'm 21 I still have plenty of time to get a 1000 later on or try one out first. Not like I'd notice much difference on the road is it?

An R1 at 21 IMO is a stupid idea. Get the R6 at most and get some road super-sports experience before jumping on an R1.
You'll save on the insurance and probably your own life.

What do you have at the moment?

Had a blackbird age 22. I don't think age is enough to rule out a bike, plenty of guys much older don't have the restraint to ride a 600 safely let alone a 1000cc+ bike. It's more about the attitude of the individual... age can be an indication admittedly.

I've got a 2000 R6 which I've had for the last 2.5 years, great bike but I've been saving up for something a bit "fancier" this year

Ah right, you said about an R6 track day, wasn't aware you have an R6 already.
Worth a shot then, but you will (as you've found out) get pounded in the rear for insurance. You got to think to yourself: Is it worth it?
The main thing you'll notice with the R1 is the sheer power. Around bends and the like, it's almost like a heavy R6.
If it was me at your age, i'd go for the R6, save some money and buy a new set of gloves and/or boots. It's still an insane bike and you could part exchange it for an R1 in a couple of years when the insurance is at least almost reasonable.

Bah, as if making the decision wasn't hard enough already you go throwing more variables into the mix! :D

Truth be told I really prefer the style of the Yamahas over the other brands which is influencing my choice a lot, oh and my Yamaha Dainese 1 piece :p

Was in the same predicament myself whether to get an r1 or r6. The R6 won in the end.
Power aint every thing and the r6 ticks all the boxes, What you lose on the straights your'll get back in the turns. Plus the r6 is a fantastic looking machine!

You should be looking at a 09 possibly a 10 plate for 5.5k

Came back with this today, 09 reg with 3300 miles. Got full Akrapovic Titanium Evolution System with Carbon slip on (Sounds awesome :D), Hyperpro steering damper and R&G crash bungs all over it!
