thinking of getting one of these next myself, but a manual one. a bit less chavvy and common than a focus st, but lighter and same engine
Sorry I missed this.
Yeah, the image thing although not a criteria, it is a plus, not that it is a problem but I rather in general, people don't know about the inside of the car. Focus ST is well known as being a boy racer, and Volvo have this reputation as an old man's car and safe car. I don't mind that. The T5 logo is the only give away really to what is under the bonnet, as even to the Diesel versions too can have dual exhaust, they can all have the R-Design body kit installed so on the road, I would not be able to tell the difference from a normal C30 to a T5 at a glance.
I've not sat down in a Focus ST so I can't compare but the Volvo is a nice place to be. The seats are really good, drove 170 miles back in it yesterday and it was so easy.
Build quality is excellent, plenty of toys if you can find the right car. Some have blind spots alert system, adaptive cruise, Dynaudio sound, keyless entry and start. I would say that general level of kit on a T5 is pretty good, or the people who buy them generally get quite a few toys with it. The boot can be an issue, at least the size of the hatch will limit the size of the luggage you want to get into it. I could fit a 50" Plasma TV, and I did, in my Yaris standing up. I doubt I could fit that in the C30, especially the rear foot well isn't flat across. That is one compromise I guess I made in picking this car. I do need to buy the hard boot cover though, I only have the "curtain" one which has that bar across the boot and it's annoying and stops things getting in and out of the car.
Tax is £290. Insurance is different for everyone but it is £450 annually for me vs £340 for the Yaris.
The problem I found is finding one with a good history, low mileage as they have stopped production for a few years now, I think the last one rolled out in 2013? And one that hasn't been ragged or at least doesn't appear to be. I have been keeping tab on what has come on the market for the post-09 facelift model and in the 2 months before I found this one I think only 1 other one I would get and that was private for £10,800. Currently there is, If it's still there, a modded one on AT and an Ex-Police undercover car. No doubt both would have been ragged to the edge of its life, especially the police one.
